Doris Nowlin Obituary

Nowlin, Doris Elizabeth (Wilson) Age 96 Doris died on Sept 23, 2006 in St. Paul. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest D. ("Dick") Nowlin; her sisters, Gladys Hayden and Laura Gething; and brothers, Norman and Gerald Wilson. She is survived by children, Elizabeth N. (Larry) Drumm, Forrest D. ("Dick"), Jr. (Marit), Sarah Jane, Lawrence C. (Susan); grandchildren, Margaret (Fran) McCaffery, Megan (Dotan), Katherine (Remy) Auberjonois, Jessica, Ann and Jane Nowlin; great grandchildren, Connor, Patrick, Marit and Jonathan McCaffery, and nieces and nephews. Doris was born in Manchester, Iowa in 1910 and grew up in Jackson, Michigan. After receiving a Master's degree from Michigan State, she moved to Minnesota in 1936 to work as a bacteriologist for the Minnesota Department of Health. She and Dick raised their family in Minneapolis and then spent 20 years in retirement in Goleta, California. Doris was the first woman elected to the vestry of St. Mark's Cathedral, served as president of the Episcopal Church Women of Minnesota, was a charter member of the Lower Bedford Street Hot Club and a long time supporter of traditional jazz. A memorial service will be held at Coventry Chapel at the Episcopal Homes, 1840 W. University Avenue, St. Paul on Monday, October 9 at 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Episcopal Church Home, 1879 Feronia Ave., St. Paul, MN 55104.
