Douglas WOOG Obituary

Age 75, of Inver Grove Heights and formerly, South St. Paul, MN passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease on December 14, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Doug was born on January 26, 1944 in St. Paul, MN to Jacob and Wanda (Lencowski) Woog. Doug is survived by his loving wife, Janice (Bystrom) Woog; three children, Amy Woog Patnode (Tom), Steven Woog (Colene) and Daniel Woog, along with his eight grand children that he adored, Reegan, Ava, Elle, Allie, Olivia, Carlyn, Anna and Jake, sister Hedy Sue Woog, sister and brother in-law, Norma & Donald O'Handley and many relatives and special friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Wanda, his sister Patricia Woog, his father and mother in-law, Bernard & Alice Bystrom. Doug was an outstanding player for both his South St. Paul High School and Gopher Hockey teams. Doug was a teacher and Guidance Counselor at South St. Paul High School for 17 years. He coached all levels of hockey from the youth players attending his camps, at South St. Paul High School, with the 1984 Olympic Team and then as the Gopher Hockey coach for 14 years. After retiring from coaching, Doug continued working in the Gopher Athletic Department and as a TV commentator on the Gopher Hockey broadcasts. Doug treated everyone he encountered with respect, a warm smile, and he always had time for a conversation. He loved spending time with his entire family at the Woog cabin that has been in the family since 1934. He loved Jan's cooking and sitting on the dock watching the grandkids enjoying water activities. Doug also looked forward to his annual Canada fishing trip, that he went on for 40 consecutive summers with his sons and many of their close family friends and relatives. He looked forward to going to lunch with his buddies on a regular basis and all of the donuts they would bring him. And, what he loved more than anything was teaching and coaching kids of all ages on the ice, especially his grandkids and their teammates. Doug garnered many honors and awards throughout his lifetime, but the one he was most touched by occurred in 2016, when the former Wakota Arena was dedicated and renamed as Doug Woog Arena. The family would like to thank all of the caring and compassionate staff at The Moments of Lakeville, the wonderful people at Minnesota Hospice and daughter-in-law, Colene, who managed much of Doug's healthcare throughout his journey with Parkinson's. A "Celebration of Life" public gathering will be held at South St. Paul High School on Sunday, December 29th from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. All are welcome, including kids and families. The hockey community, including all Woog Camp kids are encouraged to wear their hockey jersey and join the family in celebrating Doug's life. There will be an informal program and sharing of stories and "Woogisms" at 1:00 pm. A special gathering for family and friends will be held at Southview Country Club from 4:00-7:00 pm on December 29th. No flowers, please. Memorial donations may be directed to the Inver Grove Heights B.E.S.T. Foundation, the South St. Paul Educational Foundation, the Doug Woog Scholarship/Golden Gopher Fund or Minnesota Hospice in Lakeville. www.robertsfuneralandcremation.com

I first saw Doug when our Senior Class (SSP) of '50 met every Thursday evening for our bowling league. We were on alley 12 and this little kid was on alley 1 - all by himself having a fun time bowling with his little bowling ball. We were amazed that he got a strike almost every time he threw the ball. We didn't do as well :-) Doug was my youngest daughters (Class of 1976) teacher and counselor. He was a wonderful hockey coach - Our weekly outings were the Thursday and Saturday Packer games!!! I am still an avid hockey fan!!! He was a great guy and an inspiration to our community.

Jan, Amy, Steve, and Danny,

The hockey world lost one of the greatest players, coaches, and commentators last month
and I lost a great friend and teammate.

Doug may have been small in stature, especially by today's standards, but he competed with the heart of a lion and was a natural born leader both on and off the ice.

I'm sure Doug would be the first to tell you that despite his many awards and accolades, his proudest achievement was his beautiful family.

Rest in Peace, Doug

My first memory of Doug when I was a senior in high school and we had a bowling league at Woog's Bowling Alley every Thursday. We were on Lane 10 and this little kid about 5 years old with a 4# bowling ball was on lane 1 and getting a lot more "strikes" then we did. At the time we didn't know who he was but soon we found out that he was Jake Woog's son! He was there quite often when our League met. I also spent time at their house as Patty was a friend of mine. He was also my youngest daughter's counselor and history teacher and she liked him a lot!! I am a hockey fan and always watched not only my Class of 1950's team but but have been a Hockey Fan since my freshman year. I still watch hockey most every night and have been going to the MN State High School Hockey Tournament since the 60's.
We were truly blessed to have Doug as a player, coach and he touched many lives as a counselor. He will be missed.

Without Mr. Woog's guidance and pushing me to graduate High School I never would have done it I got the opportunity to thank him years after and still remembered my name. I will be forever grateful.

Doug...your contribution to this great game of hockey will never be forgotten. I remember competing against you when you wore those crazy gravy boat helmets at the U. and I was at Duluth. You played the game with such desire. You coached at all levels, and we clashed often when I was at North St Paul, and you were coaching your alma mater. You also continue such a great program at the U. of M., and you developed so many players with your camps and coaching over the years.
Your impact in Minnesota hockey is everywhere.
Thanks for a job well done my friend, and God Speed. Bill Halbrehder, North St Paul

Woogie did right by my son at Hockey Camp.
And I bet I speak for many parents of hockey kids.

in 7th and 8th grade, I was only called to play center when Doug was exhausted..
he was special, I remember the nite he came to a game with sponges taped to his face, protecting stitches from the previous nite's game - he scored a couple of goals, and we won the tournament

RIP Coach, I had the privilege to play for Doug at SSP (soccer&hockey) in early 70's. He always had the players loyalty and respect because he truly cared about each of us. Not a day has gone by that his teaching and coaching did not affect me in positive ways. What a legendary life well lived, and a treasure to so many! My deepest condolences Jan and to your entire family.

Our heartfelt sympathy to the entire Woog Family. I first met Coach when dropping off my then 6 or 7 year old son at Wakota Arena for camp. We were having trouble tying his skates tight enough. Coach came over, introduced himself to me, as my son already was well acquainted with Coach, and said he would take over. As I was walking away he said "Matt, I will show you a trick to make sure your skates are tight enough and from today forward, you will tie your own skates". He still does today. Rest in peace, Coach, you will be missed.

RIP Doug. We had a great class of '62. I am the guy who ended up in North St Paul from SSP. That meant trying to tackle you in football, I tried. You gave a lot and you will be missed.
