Fletcher DRISCOLL Obituary

Age 90 of Dellwood, MN Passed away on March 8, 2023 Fletcher Graves Driscoll, Jr. was born on September 7, 1932 to Abigail Power and Fletcher Graves Driscoll, Sr. A graduate of Breck School ('51), he studied French and geology at Carleton College ('55). There he met his future wife Beverley and was impressed by her formidable intellect and adventurous nature. They married in 1956 and moved to Germany during his service in the Army. Upon returning to the United States, Fletcher spent several years building and selling boats at the White Bear Boat Yard. In a career pivot (and with four rambunctious sons at home), he completed his PhD in hydrogeology at the University of Minnesota. With experience in field work and university teaching, he earned multiple awards and recognition as a national expert, in addition to authoring the highly respected textbook Groundwater and Wells. Through his consulting business, he served as an expert witness in dozens of high-profile water contamination trials all over the country. At the ripe age of twelve, Fletcher purchased his first sailboat – this Y-Boat turned out to be a harbinger. As grandchildren entered the picture, Fletcher realized that it was becoming difficult to fit the whole family on the E boat. Naturally, the solution was to buy a bigger sailboat. Thus the Class A Scow returned to White Bear Lake in 2001 after a more than 70 year hiatus, much to the delight of many sailors on the lake. Over the next two decades, the A boat fleet grew to become the largest active fleet anywhere – at times there were as many as ten A boats moored at the Driscoll dock. Fletcher created a lively community of sailors and wooden boat restorers who shared his passion. His wish was that his impact on the sailing community at White Bear Lake will endure. Fletcher often shared how proud he was of his four sons, and he delighted in his daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Whether spraying whipped cream directly into his grandchildren's outstretched hands, sending small children out to float on pieces of ice on the lake, traveling the world with family or creating fantastical stories about the "Green Guy" who lived in the woods, Fletcher created innumerable magical adventures for his eight grandchildren. In his years of storytelling, he made sure to include a strong, smart female character who attempted to keep the boys out of trouble, created specifically to encourage his granddaughters. Fletcher enjoyed talking with anyone who crossed his path. Strangers became friends within minutes. He loved to tell stories and share a lesson or pearl of wisdom. He had a knack for asking tough questions about values, dreams, and the 'why' of people and of life. While daunting for any new romantic partners that the younger generation might bring around, his questions encouraged introspection, honesty, and growth. One left a conversation with him feeling encouraged and heard. Ever the optimist, he approached the world believing in the goodness of people and sought to do what he could to help anyone in his world accomplish their dreams. Fletcher passed away in his childhood home on March 8, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Abigail. His strong handshakes, enthusiasm for life, and insightful questions will be deeply missed by his wife Beverley Driscoll; sons Mark (Irene), Jacques (Susan), Colin (Sheri), and Kelly (Stella); grandchildren Trevor (Annie), Lucy (Tim) Russell, Alex (Morgan), Abigail, Benjamin, Avery (Steve), Melina, and Jacqueline; great grandchildren Reagan and Marin; and brother Todd Driscoll. A celebration of Fletcher's long and rewarding life will occur late this spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the White Bear Sailing School.

Fletcher taught hydrology at his alma matar, Carleton College, Spring semester 1976. His enthusiasm, and sheer love of the field sparked a life long interest and passion for weather and rainfall that lasts to this day. I treasure Fletcher, who I barely knew, for this, and I am sorry for the family´s loss.

I am sorry to learn about Fletcher. I only saw him a few times at Susan and Jacques home but each time he treated me as a close friend. He shared interesting stories and I´ll always remember his insight about the big mystery of the WBL water level. It´s my loss to have never made it to a boat restoration session. Fletcher made the world a better place. Condolences to Bev and their family.

My condolences to the Driscoll family in the passing of Fletcher. I came to babysit for four wonderful boys and got to know the Driscoll family. Fletcher was a kind and good man who along with Beverly influenced my life and I was a more open minded and better person for knowing them. I have great memories of the time spent with your family. I think of you often. Remembering Port Wing, fun times.

I believe it was in the late 1960's when I would stop by Amundson's Boat Works to have a chat with Fletcher. We had many meaningful conversations, and I so appreciated his all around knowledge and helpful suggestions. His welcoming attitude always made me feel at ease with him. A good man.

I spent 1 day with Fletcher in 1992 early in my career. I did him a small favor that day and he spent the evening sharing his experiences and knowledge, asking me questions, while gifting me with advice and mentoring which shaped the next 30 years of my professional life. Thank you. The industry has lost one of its most influential leaders.

The ETERNAL OPTIMIST! I worked with him for many years at Johnson Screen. In 1976, he initially convinced me to move from the Export/International Operations to take on the sales territory of Minnesota for the Domestic Well Screen Department. He pushed us all to seek the highest level we could achieve. We did because he made us believe we could.

Thank you Fletcher and Bev for your generosity in letting my three sons keep their E-scow moored in front of your dock for many sailing seasons. My Brother-in-law Tom Bumgardner before them. Tom passed his interest in sailing to my boys at an early age. To this day the my three sons are active in the WBL sailing club as a result of your generosity and knowledge of sailing. They skipper their own E-scow and our regular crew members for the A-scow Monday night races. Now my middle son Tim as his 6 year old registered for sailing lessons at the White Bear Lake Sailing school. I can remember many of times standing on the Driscoll dock with the always friendly and great conversationalist Fletcher. Oh yes, Thank you Bev for giving my boys the stern look about not wearing their life jackets in windy conditions. They immediately learned their lessons.

To our dear friend Fletcher-

Thank you for making our family what it is today. More than 12 years ago, you forever changed a little boy named Matt Dresen at 8 years old. He came into your barn (crabby that he couldn´t play video games), and was quickly brought into the fascinating world of boat restoration. You let him observe, explore, but most of all, you taught him the beauty of sailing - it´s more than a boat. It´s in your soul.

You mentored this young boy, you made him smile, you encouraged him to keep going, but most of all, you led by example, showing what it takes to not only be a good sailor, but a leader in the community.

Thank you dear friend - I tear up thinking I won´t see you at the next sailing event. While you´re not there in person, the legacy you´ve left behind will shape generations of young sailors for years to come.

Our deepest gratitude
Tom, Terri, Matt & Robbie Dresen

Fletcher, you made my first X boat in 1962 with those same hands that always greeted me with a firm grip and that warm welcoming smile in your shop. It was a joy to know you. That you made the boat that put me on a sailing path that is at least as passionate today as ever is never far from my mind. Fair winds and thank you Fletcher.
In gratitude,

Captain, my captain. Fletcher, my Fletcher. I was one of those fortunate souls that followed his lead back to WBL and on to an A Boat. Our Party on a Boat was always encouraged by our A Boat Music Man. He joined our party on a boat many times helping us improve our boat speed. He knew many members of the generations of all of us, especially if they were connected to the lake. I love his family and feel so deeply for their loss of a tremendous family man. I will miss him most for his encouragement and bringing me back to sailing. Bon Voyage Captain Fletcher.
