Florence Fick Obituary
Age 87 Of St. Paul Passed away peacefully at home with her husband of 61 years by her side on May 23, 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Florence Bouthilet, sister Lorraine, and brothers John and Bob. She will be greatly missed by her loving and devoted husband Ken; children Roger (Carrie) of Vashon, WA, Carole (Dave) Carlson of Chanhassen, MN, Mary (Dave) Vandegrift of St. Paul, MN, John (Teri) of Marine, MN; sisters Jo Parker and Carole Bouthilet of Amissville, VA; grandchildren Todd, Jill, Kelsey, Ben, Tom, Dan, Eric, Lisa, and Dylan; many nieces and nephews. Florence was a pioneer for women entering the field of medicine. She graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1947. She interned at Children's Hospital in San Francisco, CA. Flossie then returned to the University of Minnesota for her residency in anesthesiology. She was a long-time partner in Anesthesia Associates in Minneapolis. She practiced medicine for many years at several hospitals in the Twin Cities primarily St. Barnabas Hospital and the Metropolitan Medical Center. She established the first One Day Surgery Center in Minneapolis at MMC in 1976. Flossie was a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Medical Association. In addition to her outstanding professional accomplishments, she was also an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother. Flossie and Ken traveled the world together. She was a Camp Fire Girl Troop leader and first aid volunteer for her son John's high school football team. Her hobbies included playing with her grandchildren, reading, knitting, cross-word puzzles, and walking along the East River Road near the home the family lived in for 56 years. Flossie and Ken loved spending winters at their condo in Madeira Beach, Florida where she loved walking on the beach, hunting for shells, and sight-seeing with her grandchildren. She also volunteered in the nurse's office at the local elementary school where she comforted sick children and put band aids on skinned knees. She was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Paul. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the church, 104 Snelling Ave. So., St. Paul, MN, on Monday, June 25 at 12:00 noon with visitation starting at 10:30 am. A luncheon will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Minnesota Medical Foundation - Florence J. Bouthilet, M.D. Endowed Scholarship or Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Paul.
