Garl RIEKE Obituary

Age 80 Passed peacefully at home having managed Type I Diabetes for 76 years. It shaped his dedication to science, medicine, and working hard to solve problems. Educated UW, Seattle; Ph.D. Anatomy and Cell Biology LSU Medical Center, New Orleans; post-doctoral study UCLA Brain Research Institute. Garl taught Neuroscience to nearly 3,000 medical students during a 35 year career at: Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia; Texas A & M University, College Station; Meharry Medical College, Nashville; and UND School of Medicine, Grand Forks. Retired 2008, lived in St. Paul, and family country home Stockholm, SD. Never bored, he built model airplanes, woodshop work, watched birds, volunteered, read, fished, and traveled. His precious family are wife of nearly 56 years, Judith (Judy); sons, Stuart (Monique), Anchorage, AK and Eric (Kathleen) Clear Lake, MN; brother, Ross (Kit) and sister-in-law Roberta Rabine; grandchildren, Hunter, Wesson, Alexis, Izabel Megan, Paul (Rachel) and Adam (Brittany). Preceded in death by parents. Celebration of Life later. Memorials to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the American Diabetes Association. Thank you to Our Lady of Peace Hospice for compassionate care during Garl's final journey.

I was so sorry to hear about Garl. I was struck by what a loving wife you have been. I didn't know Garl well, but both of your dedication to social justice was evident and reading about his work, I see it too. I hold you in my heart and hope to bump into you at Unity
