John, I'm missing you so much tonight. I've been looking at photos of Lake Pepin and remembering my visits there with you, not to mention the other places you lived in the thirty years I knew you. I wish I would've known when you died so I could've been at your memorial. I wish I would have been feeling better when you visited me in Frostburg; I know that trip was not a lot of fun for you. I can't believe you are gone. I am not the same without you and miss you terribly, my dear friend.

I just found out about this today, my birthday. I haven't been in touch for quite a while--I had no idea he had died. He and I have been very good friends for decades. The last I talked to him, he was changing from his home phone to his cell phone, and I wasn't able to get in touch with him after that. I tried emailing him but didn't hear back. I kept telling myself that, sometimes, we get caught up in our own lives and are not in touch as often. I didn't want to look at obituaries because I was sure he was still with us and we'd catch up and hopefully see each other soon. But because it's my birthday and I haven't heard from him I finally googled him and learned the truth. John was one of the best friends I have had in my life, and I'm horribly embarrassed that I didn't know this sooner. I'm devastated. John was one of the most loving, giving people I have ever known. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

I met John at the YWCA pool during water aerobics. He had a warm heart and a bright smile for everyone! He talked about quilting and gardening and I learned from him. He was always so gentle and accepting - a model for us all.
