John Notebaart Obituary

Notebaart, John J. - 'Jack' Age 97, Of Appleton, WI Formerly of North St. Paul, passed away at his home Thursday April 10, 2003. Jack was born Dec. 9, 1905 in Antwerp, Belgium, the son of the late Christian and Mary (Raymaker) Notebaart. The family emigrated to the United States in 1908, resided in Chicago for 3 years and then North St. Paul, Minnesota where Jack graduated from high school in 1924. He participated in football, basketball, and baseball, and received the Outstanding Athlete Award. Jack attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Stout with a degree in Industrial Education in 1929. He earned letters in football and basketball and won All-State Honors in both sports. In 1981, Jack was elected to the Stout Athletic Hall of Fame. Following graduation he was employed by the Appleton Vocational and Adult School where he taught printing for 42 1/2 years, retiring from what is now Fox Valley Technical College in 1971. Jack was united in marriage to Eileen Zuehlke on June 16, 1934, sharing 58 years together before her death February 6, 1993. Survivors include: daughter, Barbara (Richard) Nehls of Madison and their children, Jennifer (Paul) Snyder, Dr. Sarah Rikkers, and Paul Nehls; a son John Notebaart of Appleton and his children Ross and Katie Notebaart; brother, Edward (Lois) Notebaart of No. St. Paul; sister-in-law Gert Notebaart of Red Wing, MN; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Jack was preceded in death by 5 sisters; and 3 brothers, all of No. St. Paul. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 11AM Monday April 14 at ST. THERESE CATHOLIC CHURCH, corner of Wisconsin and Morrison Sts. in Appleton, WI with Fr. William Hoffman officiating. Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call directly at the church from 10AM Monday until the time of service. A memorial fund has been established.
