John was a great friend and will be greatly missed. I had the pleasure of being a student of John's in the Manufacturing Engineering program at UST when they were first founded. We attended classes in any basement space or room that could be found, and John was a driving force behind it all. After graduation, John introduced me to teaching in the program, and I am surprised to say that was more than thirty years ago. He was a great mentor and a hero to many. We all wish you fair winds and following seas on your next journey John!

To Joyce and families, my condolances. I had the pleasure of knowing and working with John during his fruitful St. Thomas Engineering years. The depth and breadth of his professional knowledge of manufacturing and related contributed mightily to the solid foundation of the Engineering school at UST. He spoke simply, straightforward without hyperbole, but with a quick smile to emphasize a thought. His integrity was unsurpassed. I served as his "advisor" for a graduate degree that he took in my department (Organization Learning & Development) at UST, but I'm sure I learned more from him than visa-versa. R.I.P.

John was truly a remarkable guy, an authentic leader and a wonderful friend. There are so many stories that speak to his contributions, but one in particular comes to mind.
After graduating from St. Thomas he was awarded a scholarship to graduate school. During the summer, he began working in a small group at 3M and delayed continuing his formal education. His mother was not happy, and kept pressing him to continue, but he persisted in his career at 3M. Fast forward to John returning from a business trip to Japan years later. 3M announced that he had been promoted to a Vice President. He called his mother when he got back and asked is she saw the announcement. She had. He asked, what do you think? She said, 'think what you could have become if you had just gone to grad school.'
His mother was a driving force for John, and I believe inspired him to help others finish their graduate education, so they wouldn't have to face the same admonitions from their mothers.
