June McAuliffe; a few words I would like to share.
I heard the news of June's passing in the evening while hanging lights on the house for the season. I checked and as usual found a few of the lights had burned out and I went to the task of replacing the bulbs with tears running down my face. As I finished the task, suddenly all the bulbs lost their brightness and I was standing in front of the house in the dark. This, not being my first rodeo, I knew the fuse for the string of lights had blown and I paused for a moment and smiledbecause it reminded me of June.
She enabled the lights of life. She was the fuse in my life. She embraced and embodied the words altruism and selflessness. June, being my fuse, enabled me to shine as a young adult. She was content to stay in the background glowing in the brightness of her bulbs she lovingly place on her string.
I once counted the nights I slept at the 4-H building and came up with well over six months in the ten years I worked in June's "Arts-In". Her encouragement from a teen participant to Director ensured me a life of confidence. We spent numerous hours and miles traveling to all ten Minnesota reservations bring arts, crafts, and puppets to children under June's patient guidance in the "Workshops of Expression". June taught by example, allowing me a co-directorship of the "Humanities Workshop" at the National 4-H Center, hosting young adults from across the country with the nation's arts and culture. With each one of these interactions, June always the fuse, allowed her lights to shine brighter becoming more confident and self-assured as her bulbs grew into adulthood.
With all this time we spent together, working, playing, eating, laughing, June for me wasn't just a mentor, guide, and friend, but a second Mother. She was the Giving Tree come to life. I will always remember her kind, gracious, generosity of feting me with a party of old 4-H friends each time I came back to Minnesota. Her style for giving a party from food to fare, refreshments and atmosphere was second to none. I was blessed the day I met her and have a deep sadness as I know so many have with her passing. She touched the hearts and lives of untold children, young adults, and co-workers.
June strung a lot of lights in her life. I am but one of countless people who are better off for being a bulb on June's string of lights. I have to interject that with June being the fuse in this metaphor; Joe was the current and base for Junes work. You could not have had better pairing of two people working towards the enhancement of the 4-H philosophy of Learn by Doing. Thanks Joe.
My seasons chore is now completed, I stand back on the sidewalk and wipe my eyes as a light rain fallsI look at this house in it's misty glow of the lightsand they seem a little dimmer this year and probably for more years to comeas they don't make fuses like they use to.
