Judge Maas changed my life as a teenager. I was on the wrong path and he helped me, when no one else did. Thanks to him my life got on track early. A few years later I contacted him to officiate my wedding, he remembered me. Still married 27 years later, and will always be grateful for his kindness, care and love. I think of him often.

Grandad,
It´s been a long time without you. We are all doing great. The first grandkid is getting married this summer! Not me don´t worry, mike is getting married to a wonderful woman Hailey. You would love her I know it. Most of us are in college or beyond, we are all doing alright. You´ve taught me lessons I still use. Even how to make saltines with cheese and Worcestershire sauce the correct way :) I miss you every day but you remind me to always stay ahead in school. After failing biology (oopsie) I´ve decided to go with the pre law route. Hopefully I am as good as you were and help as many people as you did. Love you grandad, keep making the crackers up in heaven for me.

Dear Dad,
It has been almost a year since you died and just as you wanted we as a family have adjusted the family sails and continue the course that you and mom have set forth. We all miss you very much. Every day I think of you. You were a wonderful dad and I am proud of you when I talk about you about. Thank you for being my dad.
Love you always,
Nancy

Dear Maas Family,
We are sorry to hear of your loss. We had the pleasure of getting to know Ken during the summer of 2000, prior to our July wedding. Upon searching for an officiant, Ken was recommended by a family friend. From the moment we met him at Perkins, we enjoyed his humor and compassion. A few years later our paths crossed and I got to know Ken on a more personal level, including his love for what he did and the lives he changed. Ken truly will be missed. Our thoughts are with your family.

Kenny and I were born three weeks apart, grew up a block apart in Saint Luke's Parish and attended grade school for eight years together. He went on to Saint Thomas Academy; I went on to Cretin. But we maintained our friendship until our late 20s, when life and family obligations occasioned our drifting apart.
I've never forgotten Kenny--who could? I am sorry to learn that he has passed away. My sympathies to you all.

Dear Nancy:
I am sorry to read of your father's passing. Please accept my sympathy. I know your family was close and it must be very difficult for you and your family at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Over the years I have thought about you so often. I look through pictures of us while in Winter Park and laugh when I think of all the fun times we had together. I remember fondly the friendship we had for that short period of time in our lives. Take care.

Judge Maas was a mentor to me and my peers when we were new lawyers. He always had a word of kind advice for us ("don't let the jury know you're worried") and ("Just because your opponent is a jerk doesn't mean you have to follow suit"), and he never hesitated to catch us in the hall to let us know how we were doing professionally (or to encourage us to take time to travel in Ireland). I will miss him.

My husband and I had the pleasure of having Judge Maas marry us in March of 2001, through the recommendation of a friend. He helped make our day even more special with the professionalism and humor he brought to the ceremony. I'm sure he will be very missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Mrs. Maas, Nancy and Family,
First let me express my condolences on your loss. I've had the pleasure of knowing Nancy since June 13, 1983 (to be exact). We trained and worked together at Granada Royale and I've been lucky enough to have her friendship ever since. I remember talking to her at work about my boyfriend and I deciding to get married but being unsure as to how to go about planning a non traditional ceremony. Nancy volunteered her dad's services and that is how we met Judge Maas.
He was kind enough to meet us in St. Croix Falls and marry us on the paddle wheeler, making sure to marry us on the right side of the St. Croix so we were "legal". He impressed upon us the importance of marriage and gave us a lovely ceremony to look back on. Wally and I are still happily married and have 3 wonderful children. Years later, while nervously serving jury duty, I happily encountered Judge Maas again. He introduced me to the other jury members saying: "I married Nancy" (and then he paused for effect, while everyone looked at me turning three shades of red) and then went on "To her husband". After which everyone laughed. The trial ended without going to jury.
Still years later, Judge Maas precided over the wedding of my older sister. Another happy ending, of many I'm sure. He's left quite a legacy! I hope your family gains comfort from knowing how much Judge Maas meant to so many. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you all!
Sincerely,
Nancy and Wally Pustol

I have appeared many times in front of Judge Maas representing clients. One day I was waiting in the hallway in front of the courtroom with a client who was visibly nervous. Judge Maas walked by, stopped, and told my client that I was a very good lawyer and had represented him recently as a juvenile. He pointed to his white hair and said "Look what happened!!" My client relaxed immediately. Judge Maas was always ready with a joke and liked to make people feel comfortable. I will miss him.

While at St. Luke's and STMA I enjoyed Kenny's friendship and humor. It was on the bench, after years as a trial lawyer, that another facet of this man evolved. As a judge he was a natural. He knew the law and procedure well. He had obvious charisma and control of the proceedings. Kenny was a concensus great judge among trial lawyers.

Hello KJ,
I am so very sorry to hear about your father. He was a wonderful man and was a major positive influence in my life. He always gave me such good advice. I will miss him.
I still wear the belt buckle that he and your mother gave me for a high school graduation gift. It has been installed on increasingly longer belts over the years. I think about your parents every time I wear it.
When my wife and I decided, with very short notice, that we would like to be married on Valentine's Day your father not only performed the ceremony but was so very helpful and supportive in ensuring that everything got done properly.
He also did a great job when my brother and his wife chose to have him perform their wedding ceremony.
Please pass my condolences along to your mother, sisters, brother, and the rest of the family. My prayers go with you.
Best regards,
Kev

Mr. Maas was the judge we selected to marry my husband and I on may 18, 2001. We choose him after hearing many good things about him. Mr. Maas impressed us immediately with his professional and compassionate demeanor. We could tell right away that this was a man that didn't take his duties lightly and one who was serious about what he did.
Mr. Maas wanted to meet us after we initially spoke and we met at a Perkins in stillwater. He talked about his family with passion and you could tell he was equally passionate about his work.
I am saddened to hear that Ken is no longer with us but I believe his memory will continue to live on in those he touched through his work. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Before I became pastor at St. Jude's and got to know Ken personally, I witnessed him as a judge at a trail where an 8 year old girl was testifying. He showed such sensitivity toward her I was deeply moved. Then as I got to know him I only became more impressed. He truly was an outstanding Christian, Catholic gentleman. My prayers are with you. Sincerely in Christ, Jerry Vandrovec

I remember Judge Maas from his days at Hessian, McKasy and Soderberg, when he was an attorney in the St. Paul office. He was truly a litigator with a heart, I recall. I wrote him once about one of the cases he was overseeing.
He spoke very personally and graciously. He is one of the best people I met in the legal world.
At one of our Christmas parties, I performed a song I wrote for him and he took it with his usual class. He will be missed. I cherish his memory. There's no seeming justice in losing a great man like him. Thank God you had him at all.

I have had the pleasure of working with Judge Maas in the courtroom. He was always gracious and had a great sense of humor. Whenever I saw him walking past our desks in Court Scheduling, I knew what he was looking for - chocolate! I would do my best to find him a mini hershey bar. He will be missed dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with Jibby and his entire family! I bet Judge Maas and Marilyn are having a blast up there!
