A FEW MEMORIES OF UNCLE PAUL BY HIS NEPHEW JIMMY OCTOBER 29, 2018
I have fond memories of Paul and his sense of mischief. You just knew that when he walked into a room, there was going to be fun. Whether he was teasing one of his nephews or plotting some other kind of trouble, he made great entertainment for everyone to enjoy. He will surely be missed. I have some good memories of Paul and have repeated some of them here.
Paul was a big teaser, and no one was exempt from this. For example, he had a special name for his mother - Battling Brunska, Queen of the Underworld. He would introduce her to people using this name, even though she was probably the last person on earth to deserve it. She would invariably respond with a giggle and, Oh, Paul.
We were once gathered in his kitchen for a holiday meal. Suddenly, I asked Paul, who was sitting across the table from me, to, Please pass the pickles. Well, thats just what he did. He passed the entire plate of pickles, juice, plate, and all. There was green pickle juice everywhere. We were all laughing loudly, except for Audrey and my mother, Eleanor. They were bit impressed at all. But Paul had a great laugh out of it.
This story is from grandpa, but it involves Paul. The two of them were hunting in a marsh with waist-high waders when, all of a sudden, Grandpa hollered, Duck! Now, if you think about it, there are several ways of interpreting this word when used in this situation. Well, it seems that Paul thought something was coming at him so he ducked under the surface of the water to avoid getting hit. Instead, his waders filled up with water and he got soaking wet. Grandpa, on the other hand, had seen some ducks approaching the two of them, and was just alerting Paul to the approach of the birds. Grandpa used to love telling this story and so he repeated it often.
Pauls first car was Mercury, 1955, I think. He was so proud of that car. He valued my dads knowledge of cars and so asked him to ride along with him and for a test drive. They were gone for about hour and when they returned, Paul was very excited and ran into the house to announce that they had gotten the car up to 70 mph. That was pretty fast in those days.
We were over to Paul and Audreys house when someone asked Paul how to spell Schultz, the name of one of his friends and he replied, S-C-H-ultz. I thought that was hilarious.
When I was quite young, Paul would tuck me under one arm, push his other arm straight out in front of him, and run through the Grandpa and Grandmas house as if he was on a football field and I was the football. Well, this usually got laughs from those present and giggles from me. But there was one occasion when the Mechanics Arts wonder came just a little too close to the one of the cabinets in the kitchen and rammed my head into it. I screamed. Grandma, and Eleanor were yelling at Paul, who set me down and ran up into his room. He genuinely felt bad and I think my days at playing football with Paul in the kitchen were over.
I used to find Grandpa and Grandmas house fascinating. I especially liked the front porch overlooking the Mississippi, that old black reciprocating fan in the kitchen, and the sheds Grandpa had in the back yard. But very near the top of the list of my favorite things was Pauls room upstairs. Although I seldom had the opportunity to go up there, I would sneak up there as often as I could to check out his collection of model airplanes and battleships. They were obviously assembled with great care because the detail was so fine. The planes were hung from the ceiling and the battleships were on his dresser mounted on plastic stands.
