Rich was a fan of the Minnesota RollerGirls Atomic Bombshells and we were proud to have him. In fact, he made a special piece of flare to show his enthusiasm and spirit. We are regularly blinded while we're out on the track, but you didn't have to look hard to see Rich in his hard hat. His absence will be felt and we will keep him close to our hearts. Rich - the orange flag waves for you today.

Smiling from ear to ear when he returned to work after marrying Hiroko.

I have had the pleasure to start my adulthood and begin the experiment of forging our journeys with Rich. As friends we went through challenges and obstacles, and Rich was always ready to listen and help weigh options.

Through ups and downs he was always ready and open to new experiences and would never let an obstacle hold him back with his determination to move forward or at the least, take an interesting detour. Rich had so many varied interests he was always full of surprises.

Being friends with Rich I got to meet so many other family and friends of his through the years and all of the loving people in his life. And even of those I met would barely scratch the surface of those Rich touched, and in turn Rich was inspired by.

I keep the whole Kooyer family in my thoughts and remember the smile and chuckle of Richard through all the joys and excitement we shared.

Rich worked in our division at the state health department. He was such a great person. He got to know so many people in our division and when they had special interests, he'd remember and pass along information when he came across it. Truly, Rich broke the mold. One of a kind. He was always upbeat and was a "can-do" person. We will miss him greatly. My sympathies to his family.
