I first met Rita in the summer of 2015, at a gathering of friends who would, within a few years, become family. I was intrigued by her patrician air of elegant competence and enjoyed listening to her chat with her young great grandchildren about their lives - school, sports, family events. She was kind and interested, full of friendly and encouraging support.
Rita loved beautiful art and good music and was herself an accomplished pianist. She had both a great sense of humor and an appreciation for good companionship and fun. She loved being with people who showed spirit and personality.
Rita arrived at family dinners with a prayer she had written for the occasion. She prayed with the reverent familiarity or one who lives in the presence of God and recognizes the movement of his hand in our lives. Soon after her beloved husband died five years ago, I asked her how she was doing. She told me frankly that she missed him terribly but sensed that he was with her every day. We talked a little about the famous passage from St. Augustine´s Confessions, "... our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee".
You are now at rest in the Lord, dear Rita. "May holy angels lead you forth to paradise, and may the martyrs greet your coming home. May you find welcome there within God´s dwelling-place ... may the choir of angels greet you." And, until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
