Niels Mortensen Obituary
He was born April 5, 1926 in Ephraim to Paul and Elvira Thomsen Mortensen.
He married Verda Mae Schultz March 23, 1951 in the Manti LDS Temple. Verda Mae died May 3, 2002. He married LuRue Caldwell Nov. 27, 2004, they later divorced.
Eldon grew up in Ephraim and from the age of 13 he would spend his summers in Roosevelt working for his aunt Marion in her store. He served in the US Army as a medic in the 24th US Infantry Division in World War II. After the war he married and moved to Roosevelt to work full time and eventually took over the store. For many years he and Verda Mae owned and operated Marion's Variety. He was well acquainted with a lot of people through his work.
He enjoyed working in his yard and flower gardening, he especially loved roses. He was an ordinance worker in the Vernal Temple.
He was proud to be 100% Danish.
He is survived by children, Christine (Robert) Mathews, Roosevelt; Paula (Ken) Salminen, Craig, Colo.; Kevin (Sandra) Mortensen, Vernal; Marisa Mortensen, Roosevelt; Karl (Rebecca) Mortensen, Woods Cross; and Chad (Joan) Mortensen, Roosevelt; 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He is also survived by a brother, Paul Ivan (Jewel) Mortensen, and sister, Carol Marie Mortensen, both Salt Lake City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers, Leo Mortensen, Leland Mortensen, and aunt, Marion Mortensen.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 5, at 11 a.m. at the Roosevelt LDS 4th Ward Chapel, 10 S. State Street.
A viewing will be held Tuesday at the church from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Burial will be in the Roosevelt Memorial Park with military honors by the American Legion Post # 64.

Dear Mortensens,
I was saddened to read about the passing of your dad. He was an icon in Roosevelt. He will surely be missed. I have missed your mom for a lot of years. She was so sweet and played for a group of us Fourth Ward ladies to sing for years. I'm sure they are happy to be reunited.

Dear Mortensens, I have long been following the UBS obituaries and, sadly, have now seen that of my Father's (& late Mother's) dearest friend Eldon. If you have copies of UBIC Programs from the mid-60's you will see that Verda Mae & my Mom, Aileen Gamblin, were the music program. Through these many years since my parents and yours were linked through great friendship. My Mom died in 2003 but my Dad & yours stayed in touch. It was a difficult thing for me to call him with this news of the loss of his friend. The last time we saw your folks was around 1980 when we visited Roosevelt. My Dad, Bill Gamblin, asked me to send for him as well as he has macular degeneration and can't see to write. My sister Becky (Gamblin) Rowland, and my brother John Gamblin, and I, Janice (Gamblin) Butler also send our condolences to you. He & your Mom were very special to us all. May God Bless and bring His Comfort to each of you.

Eldon was a wonderful man and my heart goes out to his family. I lived in Roosevet for most of my childhood and some of my fondest memories were of Marion's Variety. When I received my allowance, I would run down to the store a buy a bbq burger and a chocolate malt! Eldon would always give the extra ice cream that was in the metal cup. Eldon was always kind and I will miss his friendship.
