Marlys Santema Obituary
Marlys was born on October 4, 1941, in Milo Township. She grew up in Foreston and graduated from Milaca High School in 1959. On November 2, 1963, she married Harold Santema and they raised two children in Milaca.
Marlys dedicated 30 years of her life to working in the Milaca Public Schools kitchen, where she touched the lives of many with her kindness and warmth. She always cheered on the Milaca sports teams with great pride. She was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church for 63 years.
She is survived by her loving daughter Lorna (Laura Hecimovich); and siblings Elaine Freichels, LaDonna Olson, Helen Sanborn, Don (Anita) Deuel, Rick (Ann) Deuel, and Darla Butler; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Marlys was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harold, her son Mike, her parents Percy and Florence Deuel, her brother Floyd Deuel, and her sister Marian Grow.
Marlys was known for her friendly nature, contagious laugh, and love for music. She was known to spread joy by playing the accordion for others. She enjoyed visiting with friends over afternoon coffee, cheering on her beloved Vikings, and shaking dice or playing cards. Her family and friends always held a special place in her heart.
Though she aged gracefully, Marlys' spirit remained forever young, as she fondly referred to herself as "forever 39."
A celebration of Marlys' life will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 11 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Milaca with Pastor Kate Mensing officiating. Visitation will take place from 9:30 - 11 AM at the church on Saturday. Following the service, there will be a luncheon at Zion Lutheran Church, with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery at later date.
Marlys' family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Milaca Elim Home and Trinity Hospice Care for their tremendous care and support.
May Marlys' memory bring joy and comfort to those who knew and loved her.
