Leonard Santema

Leonard Santema, age 83, passed away at the United Living Community of Brookings SD, on February 8, 2026, after suffering a debilitating stroke in December 2016.

Len was born on May 11, 1942, to Gerrit and Johanna Santema of Volga SD. He was united in marriage to Linda Jorenby on August 31, 1962. They were blessed with two daughters, Melody and Michelle.

Len owned and operated Santema Agency in Brookings SD for over 40 years. He was an avid Jackrabbits basketball fan and loved all sports. He never missed “Pie Day” at the Valley Restaurant in Volga SD.

Len is survived by his wife and daughters, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Art (Sharon), Bill (Deanna), and Mike (JoAnn), as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Mary Ann Williams, Bertha (Bea) Coulson, Helen Johnson, and Gladys Artz.

The family wishes to extend our sincerest gratitude to all the caregivers at United Living Center who provided Len with such kind, loving and understanding care all these years. We would also like to thank the AseraCare Hospice folks for their care during the last year.

No services will be held. Rest in Peace Dad…you have had a long journey and it is time to go home.
