Colleen Lynn Finnegan, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away during the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, at the age of 77 in Sonora, California.
Colleen was born on Dec. 1, 1945, in Berkeley, California, to Chet and Adele McConnell. The family moved to Sonora, where she met her lifelong love, Robert Finnegan, on the playground of Sonora Elementary School (the Dome) in 1956. Their love story was truly remarkable and enduring, from their first dance to Al Ward and the Epics at the Sonora Fairgrounds to their engagement while Robert served in the United States Air Force. They married on Jan. 3, 1965, at the Church of the 49'ers in Columbia, a place of deep spiritual significance for Colleen. Her unwavering devotion to her faith and her church community was a guiding force throughout her life, providing strength, purpose, and a sense of belonging.
Colleen's professional journey saw her serve as a medical transcriptionist in various institutions, notably at Yosemite Pathology in Sonora for 25 years. Her dedication to her family was evident in her role as the unofficial scorekeeper at her children's baseball games and her unwavering support for her husband Robert. The couple's later years were filled with travels, from the vibrant cultures of South America and the Caribbean to the ancient wonders of southeast Asia and Europe. Colleen's strength was evident in her battle with health challenges, and her legacy is one of love, resilience, and commitment.
Colleen is survived by her husband, Robert; sons Marc and Chris; daughters-in-law Audra and Autumn; and grandchildren Hannah, Delaney, Samantha and John.
Colleen was preceded in death by her brother ,Bill McConnell (1968); father, Chet McConnell (1974); and mother, Adele McConnell (1997).
Colleen's life was a testament to the power of love, family, faith and perseverance. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A private memorial service will be held.
