Alexander Saltmarsh Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander William Saltmarsh, a lifelong resident of Bow, New Hampshire, who died peacefully at the family home on May 19, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on January 31, 1946, Alex was the beloved husband of Hope Saltmarsh, with whom he shared 57 devoted years of love and friendship. His departure leaves a significant void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he enriched.

Alex was the son of the late Donald Warriner Saltmarsh and Dorothy Alexander Saltmarsh. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald Saltmarsh. Growing up in Bow, Alex cultivated a deep and abiding connection to his community, a quality that remained a cornerstone throughout his life.

A proud graduate of Concord High School, Alex was a vital member of the 1963 state championship cross country team, the only high school team in New Hampshire history to achieve a perfect score at the state meet. His athletic career continued at the University of New Hampshire, where he excelled in both track and field and cross country. This early display of determination and a competitive spirit characterized his entire life. Following his collegiate years, Alex channeled his passion into co-founding Fitness Resources, a highly regarded business specializing in road race management, health and fitness testing, and wellness education.

Alex was a teacher and mentor at heart. He dedicated many years to teaching science and math in the Winnisquam Regional School District, where he inspired and supported countless students. Beyond the classroom, he coached championship basketball and track and field teams in the Bow school system, helping young athletes find confidence in themselves through sport. His innate sense of duty was further demonstrated through his service in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Those who knew Alex will fondly remember his clever sense of humor, generous heart, and inherently kind nature. He possessed a unique gift for conversation, effortlessly connecting with others and making everyone feel welcomed and heard. A passionate gardener, Alex found immense joy and tranquility in nurturing his plants, a pursuit that reflected both his patient character and deep love for the natural world.

Alex is survived by his loving wife, Hope; his devoted sons, Jason (and wife Tina), Aaron (and wife Sarah), Anthony (and partner Sarah), and Davis (and wife Bekah). He also leaves behind his treasured grandchildren, Abigail and Peyton, who were a source of immense pride and happiness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Alex's name to a charity of your choice, honoring his generous spirit and lifelong dedication to helping others. I´ve just discovered that you´re gone. It´s been 50 years since I saw you last. You have always had a place in my heart and memories and will remain there. You were one of my most excellent humans. Your love of all flora and fauna led me in the directions I took in life. Blessings to Hope and your boys.

It was with great sadness that I write this. To the entire Saltmarsh family. Sorry for your loss. I respected Alex tremendously, while coaching my daughter both in Basketball and track I believe he brought the best out of both my daughter and many others. Not only athletically but also mentally. He was a true friend that I wish I could have seen more often. My hope is that all realize what he gave the community and the true meaning of sportsmanship.

Very sorry to learn of Alex´s passing. I will always be grateful to Alex for giving a Concord girl the opportunity to play with a talented group of Bow girls on his competitive Bow Roadrunners AAU team in the late 90´s. His knowledge of the game and expectations from each player helped lift my daughter Julia´s level of play and confidence that led to a successful basketball career in High School and College. I´m sure he touched many others the same way. Thanks Alex!
