Cynthia Diamantis Obituary

Cynthia Diamantis passed away on September 30, 2025 at the age of 93 after a period of declining health. She was born in Manchester, NH to Gregory and Glykeria (Harisis) Diamantis.

She attended Manchester schools and graduated from the Elliot Hospital School of Nursing. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Boston, MA and attended Boston University and received a BS in Nursing. She worked at several local hospitals before joining Massachusetts General Hospital.

Cynthia was initially hired as a Head Nurse and was recognized for her ability to develop scheduling efficiencies that improved patient experiences. It was her critical thinking skills that gained the attention of Dr. G. Octo Barnett, who in 1964 was putting together a small team to run the newly created Laboratory of Computer Science (LCS). Under his direction, she became a pioneer in the development of medical informatics and the nation's first computerized electronic health records system. The joint venture between Massachusetts General Hospital and Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN) was funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and allowed her the opportunity to travel both domestically and internationally speaking about the benefits of time-shared computing and the advantages of real-time access to patient data.

After 25 years of service to the Massachusetts General Hospital, Cynthia returned to Manchester and was engaged by the Elliot Hospital to implement its computer system. Upon the successful conclusion of the project, she took on several healthcare opportunities that bridged her to retirement.

In retirement she enjoyed volunteer work, day trips with her friends and going to Boston for Wednesday theatre. While she left Boston, Boston never left her and she would happily make the 60-minute trip south for any reason.

She was extremely fond of animals and always shared her home with a cat or two. Whenever Cynthia visited a shelter, she would be swarmed by the furry residents who were waiting to be adopted. At times, she ran the family's personal shelter taking in cats while family members traveled. She was known to cook for them and feed them by hand which resulted in great disappointment when the cats returned home.

Her years of travel resulted in a cadre of friendships that spanned the globe. The telephone allowed everyone to stay connected while infrequent travel brought them together. These special moments provided immense joy and sustained her throughout her life.

Her family was a source of enjoyment and she took great pride in her Greek heritage. Lamb barbeques served as a means of bringing family and friends together, and the Feast of the Assumption was hard coded into the family calendar. Holidays and birthdays were just more reasons to come together and celebrate life's shared blessings.

Let us keep her memory eternal. She was a dutiful daughter, a big sister even though she was younger than her brother, a caring and loving aunt and a friend to many. Family was important to her as she was always encouraging the younger generations to stay connected with cousins and long-time family friends.

Cynthia was predeceased by her parents and her brother, James Diamantis. She leaves behind her nieces, Pamela Diamantis (Morey Goodman), Catherine Parker, and Lisa Diamantis (Brian Radway), along with her great-nieces, Kristin Parker (David Wolk) and Elissa Bernstein (Davis Bernstein). She also leaves behind her sister-in-law, Janet Diamantis, Janet's sister Susan Amlaw (Rene Lindner); and a number of cousins.
