BOW -- Dr. David G. Underwood II, 77, died Nov. 21, 2008.
Dr. Underwood was born in 1931 in Leominster, Mass., and graduated with honors from Amherst College.
He was first in his class at Cornell Medical School. His internship and residency were at New York Hospital, where he was chief resident.
At Concord Hospital, he was instrumental in developing the first full-time emergency department.
He served as chief of emergency medicine.
He was president of the Concord Hospital medical staff and served on the hospital's board of trustees.
In his honor, Concord Hospital opened the Underwood Trauma Center in 2007.
He was an avid outdoorsman and musician.
He sang with the Concord Community Chorus, the New Hampshire Musical Festival Symphonic Chorus and the Pemigewasset Choral Society.
He was a member of the board of directors of the New Hampshire Music Festival and chairman of its education committee.
Family includes his wife, Ruth Murray Underwood, of Bow; former wife, Barbara Underwood of Lancaster, Pa.; three sons; three stepchildren; three granddaughters and six step-grandchildren; and sisters Dr. Anita Greene, Amherst, Mass., and Dr. Mirrless Underwood, Brewster, Mass.
SERVICES: Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Dr. Underwood's life on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the New Hampshire Audubon Center, 3 Silk Farm Road, Concord.
There will be an opportunity at 2 p.m. for those who wish to share memories of Dr. Underwood.
Guests are also encouraged to bring written remembrances and/or photos for inclusion in a memory book.

Dave was the best of the best in his Amherst Class of 1954. Being its president for a long time, I was thrilled when Dave was elected a class officer and enjoyed this remarkable man's friendship for many years. He will be
honored in May 2009 at our 55th reunion.
