PETERBOROUGH -- Esther Alice Fitts, 100, died April 2, 2009, at Pheasantwood Care and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Sandown, Oct. 31, 1908, to Alice (Bisbee) and Charles A. Fitts. The family moved to Peterborough in 1916. She was a graduate of Peterborough High School and trained to be a secretary at Burdett College in Boston.
After working in New York City and Boston, she returned to Peterborough and began her 30-year association with Yankee Magazine as associate editor and writer of the column, "Let's Go Shopping."
She loved the arts and travel. She developed many lasting friendships over the years with people from all over. She was active in the Sharon Arts Center and was a president of the Peterborough Historical Society.
Family members include her niece, Natalie Griffin; her nephew, Stanley Fitts; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews and great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews.
SERVICES: Burial will be at a later date in Pine Hill Cemetery, Peterborough.
Memorial gifts may be made to the memorial fund of Union Congregational Church, Concord Street, Peterborough 03458.
Jellison Funeral Home, Peterborough, is in charge of arrangements.
