Frances Daniels Obituary

Frances Wool Daniels November 4, 1922- July 12, 2022

Frances Wool Daniels passed away at Langdon Place in Exeter, NH on July 12, 2022, three months short of her one hundredth birthday following a period of failing health. Fran was born in Essex VT to Stella and William Wool and had four sisters. Fran was salutatorian of her high school class, graduating in 1940, and went into the nurses' training program at the Mary Fletcher Hospital (now the UVM Medical Center). Fran had the gift of years, and used that gift wisely in service to her country, her community, her Church, and, most importantly, her family. She entered WWII with the Army Nurse Corp and was assigned to the 65th General Hospital in Bolesdale, England and was tasked with readying wounded soldiers for their return to the states. While in England, Fran married first Lieutenant Donald Daniels, a bomber pilot with the 100th bomb group. They returned to Milford, NH, accompanied by their black lab, Butch, who was a mascot for the base and frequently flew on B-17s. Lt. Daniels passed away in 1969.

Fran worked in various hospitals and nursing homes throughout her long career, retiring from the VA Hospital. Following her retirement, she worked part-time in nursing homes until the age of 81. She volunteered for many charities, including knitting caps for soldiers and blankets for babies and packaging medical supplies to be shipped to soldiers engaged in war overseas. She donated her time to volunteer work in the Exeter Town Hall. Fran worked tirelessly for her church and could often be seen parked along the side of the road cutting wildflowers for Sunday's service. She frequently baked for special events at the church.

Fran loved to cook and everyone who sampled Fran's fare had a pleasurable gustatorial experience. She also enjoyed her daily walks and taking pictures, with slide shows mandatory at her house. Fran was also a voracious non-fiction reader and journalist. She was a staunch Democrat and supported liberal causes. Fran's greatest love was travel with trips to England, Hawaii, camping out with Lucy in Palm Springs, and visiting most of the Caribbean islands. She enjoyed ElderHostel, an educational travel program, and went on many trips with this organization. Fran lived a full and generous life and will be missed by all.

Fran is survived by her daughters, Pam Daniels, Exeter, NH, and Yvonne Cosgrove (Philip), Merrimac, MA, her devoted grandchildren Caitlin Shepard (Brian) Sandown, NH, Josh Cosgrove, Merrimac, MA, Shane Daniels-Roberts (Sabrina), Brentwood, NH, and her precious great granddaughter, Juniper Frances Shepard. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Catherine Daniels, Milford, NH, her much loved nieces and nephews, and her special cousin, David Locke, Palm Springs, CA. Fran was predeceased by her husband, Donald, her infant daughter, Diana, her parents Will and Stella Wool, her parents-in-law Emma and Dutch Daniels, her brother-in-law John Daniels, her sisters Catherine, Barbara, Esther, and Shirley, and her nephew, Richard Stewart.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Langdon Place at Exeter for their devotion to and care of Frances in the last months of her life. They are truly angels.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Exeter United Methodist Church in Exeter, NH, on August 13, at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Exeter Methodist Church, 307 Epping Road, Rt. 27, Exeter, NH 03833 or to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 104 Portsmouth Ave. Stratham, NH 03885.
