MIDDLEBORO, Mass. -- Fred Sparkman, 50, of Tucson, Ariz., died April 10, 2009, at Nemasket Healthcare Center in Middleboro after a long battle with cancer.
Born July 17, 1958, in Middleboro, he was the son of Fred J. and Emily J. (Garofalo) Sparkman.
He was a 1976 graduate of Apponequet Regional High School and attended Bristol Community College. He had lived in Lakeville for 25 years and for the past 25 years in Tucson.
He worked for 25 years as a construction Inspector for the Southwest Gas Co. in Arizona and volunteered as a Big Brother for several years. He enjoyed scuba diving, hunting, traveling to Hawaii, spending time at his vacation home in Mexico and visiting with his family and friends in New England. He also hiked the Grand Canyon rim to rim in 2007 and participated in weight-lifting competitions.
Besides his mother of Lakeville, family members include three sisters, Brenda Vincent of Santa Clara, Utah, Jeanne Freitas of Lakeville and Susan Sweed of Bedford, N.H.; his companion, Marilyn Tome of Tucson; four nephews, a great-nephew and a great-niece.
SERVICES: Calling hours are Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 280 Bedford St. Lakeville, Mass. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a mass of Christian Burial at Sts. Martha and Mary Church in Lakeville at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donatinos may be made to the Dana Farber Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445.

Hi, I am a retiree from Southwest Gas after 30 years, and was a dispatcher for the company & knew Fred for over 20 years. We all nicknamed him Sparky. He would come into dispatch & chat will all of us just about every morning. So sad to hear about his passing, I'm sure everyone he worked with will miss him. My prayers are with you all. God Bless.
