Hiller McCartin Obituary

LONDONDERRY - Hiller Patrick "Mac" McCartin Jr. of Londonderry died peacefully at home on Oct. 15, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Baltimore on Jan. 21, 1941, and was the son of Hiller P. Sr. and Dorothy (Standiford) McCartin.

After graduating from the University of Maryland, he became a pilot in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.

Upon retiring, he moved to New Hampshire and worked for GTE and General Dynamics.

A member of the Londonderry Presbyterian Church and the Londonderry Rotary, Mac was a tireless advocate for those suffering from substance abuse and mental illness.

He served as chairman of the Derry Friendship Center and was instrumental in launching the Avery Center in Londonderry. After co-founding Recovery Coaching in NH, he led a support program for at-risk youth at Londonderry High School. He was the New Hampshire representative to the NAMI Veterans and Military Council and was awarded the NAMI Community Organizer of the Year in 2012.

Close to his heart was the development of Vet-to-Vet, which has grown substantially in the state.

He is survived by his wife, E. Carroll McCartin; his son, John P. McCartin and his wife Rochelle; his daughter Kathleen McMahon; his granddaughter Hadley McCartin; and his two grandsons David and Joseph McMahon.

What a Great Great man! He did so much for the people in NH who have co-occurring illness. A true team leader who got things done and will remain an inspiration for the Recovery community in Derry. So grateful I got an opportunity to know him.
