Jacqueline Flood Obituary

Jacqueline J. Flood, 79, died unexpectedly Friday, September 27, 2019, from a stroke suffered two days earlier.

Jackie was born September 11, 1940, in Wilmington, Del., to Margaret Rowe Booge and James Eliot Booge II.

She was educated in Catholic schools, first the Ursuline sisters in Wilmington followed by high school at Marymount in Tarrytown, N.Y., and Rosemont College in Philadelphia. She was also a great supporter of Mt. St. Mary High School in Nashua, attended by all three of her daughters.

Jackie met her husband Peter in Beacon Hill in 1963 just after college. About a year later, they married in Wilmington, Del. The move was made to an old farmhouse in New Hampshire just in time for the arrival of their first child in 1964. Ever since then, Jackie has happily called Merrimack home and spent many happy and productive years, serving as a town councilor for several years and as an active volunteer with the Parks and Rec Department, where her most notable contribution was the development of a large piece of donated land into Watson Park. Jackie also volunteered for many years as "Mrs. Claus" with great good humor and was even the Easter Bunny at the egg hunt in the spring.

Jackie also served for a time in the New Hampshire State Legislature. She was an avid and active Democrat and well-known for participating in everything from coffees for candidates for state offices, to hosting presidential candidates overnight. She was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow Award by the Merrimack Rotary Club in recognition of her devotion to community service.

Jackie is survived by her devoted husband, Peter; daughter Jessica Leitz and husband Chris of Melrose, Mass.; daughter Susan McLaughlin and husband Chuck of Kennebunkport, Maine; daughter Deborah and husband Sergey Sevastyanov of Melrose, Mass.; son Nicholas of Merrimack; and grandchildren Keegan, Nils and Duncan Leitz; Clare and Aidan McLaughlin; and Peter and Alexander (Sasha) Sevastyanov. Jackie was predeceased by her brother, James E. Booge III. Special mention also must be made of her brother-in-law, David J. Flood, and nieces and nephews, and her closest friends from early childhood with whom she shared a rare bond: Gail, JoEllen, Aline, Kay and Ginny.

SERVICES: All who loved and admired Jackie are welcome to join the family at the Bedford Village Inn Great Hall, on Thursday, October 10, between 4 and 8 p.m. to celebrate her life.

Memorial donations in Jackie's honor may be made to the Merrimack Rotary Scholarship Fund, PO Box 181, Merrimack, NH, 03054.

Jackie and I were in the class of '62 at Rosemont College. I was a day hop, not a boarder. Please be assured of my prayers for Jackie and for the family.

Dear Peter and family, we were so sorry to hear about Jackie's death. We held her in the highest esteem over the many years we knew her. The obituary you've written conveys her so beautifully -- her warmth, wit, and vitality, her optimism and no-nonsense attitude, and above all the way in which she cared for others without drama or fuss.

When I was young, Mum and Dad and Paula and I always looked forward to our family visits with you all. And in later years, Jackie and Peter were there as a steady source of comfort and support during some particularly painful periods of our lives.

We remember this and everything abut Jackie with deep gratitude and appreciation.

with love and sympathy......
Pam and Greg

p.s. your lovely Maxwell quote reminded me of this Emily Dickinson, also so appropriate for Jackie:

To see her was a picture
To hear her was a tune
To know her an intemperance as innocent as June
To know her not - affliction
To own her as a friend
a warmth as near as if the sun were shining in your hand.

I was in the Merrrimack Garden Club with Jackie and was deeply sorry to hear of her passing. She always brought fun and laughter to any task at hand, from leading the weeding committee to the Butterfly Garden at Watson Park. It is often said to surround yourself with folks that make you smile and laugh; Jackie was one such person. Words fall short in expressing my sorrow for your loss. May you find comfort in fond memories.

Saw and spoke with Jackie just less than 1 year ago. She was the same happy and uplifting person she was when I worked side by side with her at Duffy & Associates in Merrimack in the 1980's. She was a delightful person to know and engage with and I am truly thankful and blessed that I knew her. I am saddened by her death and wish her beautiful family my deepest sympathy.

Peter and the Flood family, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your wonderful wife and mother. I have so many fond memories of New Hampshire politics and the friendships that I have made- Jackie and Peter are high on that list. I hope you find some comfort in knowing your friends are thinking of your entire family today.

It is with shock and sadness to learn that Jackie is suddenly away with the universe. The times shared with her involved Democratic politics and Merrimack community issues during our many years of residence. That she loved her husband, Peter, so much and with such joy, was an inspiration; and her children and grandchildren were her blessed treasures. When I think of Jackie, I think of her smile on that pretty face and her laugh, for laugh she did. An old memory involves the Merrimack Democrats spaghetti dinners and hers and Peter's meatballs - the stars of the "show" another, the Merrimack Democratic booth during the Fourth of July celebrations; others, of her love of her gorgeous lake home (and that steep driveway in the winter) and meals and events with neighbors DiGangi and Bruno. Jackie lived a life of principle and put her principles into action, and always, always with kindness. Always with kindness. Always working for the betterment of others. Always with generosity. She leaves a legacy of love, respect and leadership for justice and equality. She was a great woman.

Her departure leaves such a huge hole in my life. We shared so many important transitions--childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, motherhood, and aging. We enjoyed years of Scrabble, bridge, and making art.
