John Byrne Obituary

John William Byrne, age 59, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 11, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. He bravely fought a battle with cancer, but ultimately succumbed to its effects. John was born on June 6, 1964, in Manchester, New Hampshire, to John Patrick and Ruth Catherine (Lydon) Byrne. He attended Manchester Central High School and graduated in 1982. Shortly after graduating high school, John enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, following in the footsteps of his father who was a USAF veteran of the Korean War. He dedicated 20 years of his life to serving his country with honor and distinction. During his service, he completed a tour of duty in the Gulf War, demonstrating his courage and commitment to defending freedom and democracy. He also earned his B.A. from New Hampshire College and his M.B.A. from the Southern New Hampshire University while serving. Throughout his military career in supply logistics, John received numerous accolades and awards and was admired by his fellow service members for his leadership, integrity, and unwavering dedication to duty. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued his career at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for several years before returning to the USAF in aircraft contracting. John was a lifelong, avid New England Patriots fan. He was also an active member of the Tinker AFB Catholic Church and enjoyed a variety of hobbies including cycling and reading. John will be deeply missed by his loving family, including his wife, Cecilia Mary (Riehl) Byrne of Oklahoma City; daughter, Jamie Byrne of Oklahoma City; stepsons, Austin (Catherine) Kipp of Philadelphia, PA, and Joshua (Lacey) Richards of Lewiston, CA; stepdaughter, Brittany Kipp of Freeport, ME; stepgranddaughter, Maddisyn Hazard of Wichita, KS; mother, Ruth Byrne of Manchester; and sisters, Lisa Bodell of Concord, NH; Colleen Byrne-Lang, Kathleen Blanchette, and Moira Philbrook, all of Manchester. He will also be remembered fondly by his many friends and colleagues. John was preceded in death by his father, John Byrne of Manchester; his stepdaughter, Christine (Michael) Hazard of Wichita, KS; and his niece, Margaret Philbrook, of Manchester. Services: public visitation hours are from 8am to 8pm on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home in Midwest City, OK. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10am on Monday, February 19, 2024, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Midwest City, OK. Though he may be gone from our sight, John's legacy of bravery, sacrifice, and love will forever live on in our hearts.

Dearest Ruthie, Kathleen and family....I am so sorry to hear this sad news about John's passing. What a kind and special person he always was. I have great memories of our summers in Manchester and of his coming down to London when I was at school in the UK. My mum came over and we all met in London for some sightseeing and a lot of laughs! We had no idea about London and stayed in a pretty interesting bed & breakfast. John and I laughed about it years later. He was always so devoted to family whenever I saw him after and it always inspired me. Love from Leslie & Will

Ruth, Colleen and Kathleen and Family,

Very sorry to hear of John's passing. Although I have not seen him in years from his picture he seemed the same kid that would hang at our home on Ash St. May the road rise to meet him and until you meet again God hold him in the palm of His hand. RIP

Ruth, and Byrne family, I cannot believe Johnny has passed. I don't remember when I didn't know him. He was just another friend of my kid brothers from the hood! You know a real PIA when I was a teenager. So funny, such a good kid. One thing I will never forget was when he hid in the cooler at Academy Fruit and grabbed my arm when I reached in for milk! lol If not for Bill K stepping in, I would have smacked him a good one. One of a million memories in the old hood! Johnny say hi to Chris for me.

Our most favorite memory of John is watching him hold Jamie in his arms dancing in the living room. The look of love on his face and the smile on Jamie's face will live with us forever. Jamie's father was a very special man to all of us.

We met in high school and quickly became friends. We work together at Gosselins Pharmacy, love to play basketball, one on one and horse movies, concerts and drinking buddies. We shared a lot in common. I travelled to England, Ireland and Amsterdam to visit John and had a great couple of months. When I got married, John was in Japan and unable to make my wedding, but he sends me a Japanese doll of a bride and groom. Which I still have. My brother called me about John and reminds me that John was one of a very few friends of mine that my Mom and Dad likes and trusted. I missed John for a long time and am sad he is gone.
My prayers go to his Wife, Daughter, Mother, Sisters and all his families and friends.
He was a GREAT GUY.

John was a great co-worker and a good friend. He was a hard worker who cared for others and had a great sense of humor. I know his family and his faith were important to him and have no doubt he is in paradise.

In loving memory of a wonderful person. John and I met at St. Joseph´s Junior High ( Manchester NH). We became good friends right off. John was always there for a friend with a kind word or a funny joke. Although we went to different high schools, we still traveled in the same friend group. As life gets busy, unfortunately friendships get lost in the shuffle, but the memories of a good friend always last. May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

John and I worked together at Tinker AFB. When I went overseas for a job, he made it a point to keep in touch with me . I will always have fond memories of our discussions. He is a great man and I'm sure he is talking with the Lord right now.
