John Egan Obituary

LARGO, Fla. €" John Bernard Egan, 82, died Jan. 21, 2011, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born June 19, 1928, in Gorham, N.H., to William Egan and Dorothy Casey Egan. As a small boy, he found himself fascinated with trains. While still attending school, he found ways to be near trains. He would go to the engine house, sweep and run errands all while he was still in junior high and high school. His long railroad career essentially began at age 14.

After graduating from Gorham High School in 1946, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Bad Driburg, Germany, just after World War II ended. He served in the European Theater for three years and again at the onset of the Korean War in 1950-51, but served stateside. After returning home to Gorham, N.H., he joined the railroad union €" the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen €" and began working on the Grand Trunk Railway. There he found his true passion and gained the nickname "Grand Trunk John."

IN HIS LIFE: During his railroad career, John joined a group in the early 70s that was creating the North Conway Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire. After he retired from the Grand Trunk in 1988 €" a 39-year career €" he moved to Florida but continued to work on the Scenic Railroad each summer. John worked the Scenic Railroad until the summer of 2010, just prior to his passing. John worked and lived his railroad passion for more than 65 years.

John is survived by his two children, Kathleen Egan McDermed and William Raymond Egan; his grandson, Richard J. Vaught; his granddaughters, Tracy Vaught Parascandolo and Ashley Egan; and his great-granddaughter, Isabella Ann Parascandolo. He is predeceased by his son, Michael Bernard Egan.

SERVICES: A burial service will be June 18, 2011, at Holy Family Cemetery at 5 Church St. in Gorham, N.H., at 2 p.m., immediately followed by a celebration of life service at American Legion Post 82 in Gorham. Memorial donations may be sent in his name to Us TOO Prostate Cancer Education & Support, 5003 Fairview Ave., Downers Grove, IL 60515.
