John Hogan Obituary

Dr. John T. Hogan, passed away peacefully holding his wife's hand on August 14, 2025.

Born in Pomona, California, John studied philosophy at St. John's College, CA and went to graduate school at the University of California, Riverside. He left a path to the priesthood to teach high school in Wurzburg, Germany. It was there he met the love of his life, Lorraine F. Gersz and asked her to marry him on their first date in a historic castle. Initially separated by distance, they wrote love letters to each other until they married two months later. Married fifty-three years, John and Lorraine's love and commitment never waned.

After the birth of their daughter, the couple moved from Germany to Connecticut where John worked as a guidance counselor. He obtained his PhD at the University of Connecticut (UCONN) and moved to Rhode Island where he worked as the director of the counseling program and taught graduate school classes at Providence College for over thirty-four years. He loved watching PC basketball. His quiet, calm advice helped thousands of college students.

In retirement he moved to Bedford, NH. He was a dear friend to many. He loved to read and had a deeply philosophical outlook on life. He loved comics, Bloom County, and political satire. He was devoted to his family. Slowed by illness in his later years, he never let his health problems define him.

Family members include, his wife, Lorraine, his children, Kathleen, Maureen, and Ellen; his grandchildren, Izabel, Emilia, and Lilah; and his son-in-law, Tom, who will miss him forever.

Services: A calling hour will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2025, from 9 to 10 AM at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Rd, Bedford, NH.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM in the church.

Burial will follow in New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, NH at noon.

Uncle John was the quite, calming presence in the room. Always willing to listen, always interested, and always genuine. He was a beautiful soul. We are thinking of you all during this very difficult time and keeping you all close in our thoughts and prayers. Love to you all.

Dr. Hogan was an inspiration to me when I began studying for my counseling degree at Providence College. He had an incredibly warm smile and made me feel like he had all the time in the world by truly listening during our conversations. I continue to emulate Dr. Hogan and his kindness when I am with my students.
