John Howe Obituary

John Thomas "Jack" Howe, 69, of Manchester, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on March 5, 2018 at the Elliot Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born in Manchester on May 5, 1948, the "baby" of four boys, to Francis and Mary Viola (Classe) Howe and was a lifelong resident of the Queen City. He was educated in the local school system and was a graduate of Manchester Memorial High School.

Jack was a proud veteran of the NH Air National Guard where he discovered his love and the challenge of firefighting and followed that desire to the Manchester Fire Department where he served for 30 years retiring as a Lieutenant in 2000. He truly loved serving the public and will be considered a hero to many. He enjoyed the outdoors and his passions included camping, hiking and cross country skiing but above all else his family always came first. Most recently, he became interested in geneology and his family history which included a trip to Ireland. He was a member of the Manchester Professional Firefighters Association and the Amoskeag Presbyterian Church where he often volunteered to record many of the services. He was never lacking a good joke or story and will be fondly remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother and friend.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers David Howe and Daniel Howe and his sister-in-law Cecile Howe.

Members of his family include his wife of 49 years Patricia (Bellemare) Howe of Manchester, his daughter Kellie Howe of Hooksett, his son Christopher Howe also of Manchester, his granddaughter Kayla Neal and her husband Charles and his great-grandson Charlie Neal all of North Carolina, his brother Robert Howe and his wife Diane of Manchester and his sister-in-law Irene Howe of Florida as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Saturday March 10 from 10 to 11 am at the Amoskeag Presbyterian Church 95 Brook St. in Manchester followed by a Memorial Service. Inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Jack's name be made to the Manchester Professional Firefighter's Asso. 85 Sheffield Rd. Manchester, NH 03103 or to the Amoskeag Presbyterian Church. The family has entrusted the McHugh Funeral Home with his care. Condolences may be offered at www.mchughfuneralhome.com.

To Auntie Patty, Kellie, Chris and Kayla you have my most sincere condolences. I will remember Uncle Jack for his quick wit and good conversation. Though I did not get the chance to see him often, when I did it was always memorable. Many of my fondest memories are of time spent with the Howe Clan. Uncle Jack was quick with a compliment, a kind word and usually a joke or funny story. Please take comfort that he is in a happy place with those we loved who went there before him. Know also that he will always be with you. Love to you all. You are in my prayers.

Pat, Kellie, Chris and Kayla. Words cannot express my feelings on the loss of my youngest brother-in-law. I met Jack when he was 14 years old. He was always smiling and had a funny story to tell. He took life one step at a time. I remember when he married Pat. I remember when Kellie and Chris came into our lives. I remember when Kayla came along. He was so proud of his career and his family. I will miss you Jack, there are no fires to fight in heaven. Watch over your family and help them through this sad time. Love you, rest in peace and breathe deep. Irene

Sincere condolences to the family and all close acquaintances of Lt. Jack Howe. Personally I thank Jack for his commitment to serve his country, state and community and foremost his Creator. Jack was a "soldier of the Cross," able to profess and defend his Christianity. I always cherished our U.S. history oriented discussions. Ever a cheerful guy, he loved to joke and possessed that conspicuous wry Irish wit.
Really, a pleasure to be around him. Laughter was is constant companion.
I worked with Jack for 26 of his 30 year career on the MFD. He was a "bull" when it came to the heavy physical work and never backed down for a chance to test his mettle in the face of extremely dangerous hazards.
One night, January 1976, after suffering
hypothermia (-17 degrees) at a 5 alarm fire at North Turner and Foundry Streets where we removed ice crusted to his turnout gear with flares and the blade of an ax! A little while later we responded to a working fire on School Street with a man trapped on the third floor. Before we could advance the first hose line up three flights to the fire, Jack Howe raced ahead of us with Captain Bob Lemay and without protection of the hose line rescued a severely burned man and saved his life. Just one instance of many occasions of his raw heroism.
That was the spirit of the man, Jack Howe. Be assured, he rests and worships in the presence of Angels according to his faith in the promise of salvation.
