John Lucas Obituary

John E. ""Ned"" Lucas, 68, of Manchester, devoted husband, father, and friend, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on May 11, 2018, at The Birches in Concord, after a five-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.

He was born in Exeter, New Hampshire on October 19, 1949, the only child of James H. and Doris (Whitman) Lucas of York, Maine. Ned was a graduate of Phillips Andover Academy, where he developed a passion for reading and rowing, and the College of Wooster, where he majored in English and played on the golf team. At college, Ned met the love of his life, Tricia Harrod, and they were married in 1971 and then moved to Cleveland so Ned could attend Case Western Reserve Law School, from which he graduated in 1975.

In 1977, Ned returned to his New England roots, settling in New Hampshire where he was a respected real estate lawyer, working in private practice, the title insurance industry, and the public sector as an attorney for both the New Hampshire Department of Justice and the New Hampshire Legislature. He contributed his real estate knowledge to the Manchester community, serving several terms on the Manchester Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Ned's greatest joy was his family: his wife, Tricia, and their children Joshua and Anne. He took great pleasure in introducing them to his favorite Maine beaches in York and Ogunquit, instructing them on the proper way to eat lobster, and reconnecting with his family roots in Prince Edward Island. He was a covenant member of Brookside Congregational Church, UCC and an active participant in the men's ""No Green Bananas"" breakfast group. He continued his interest in rowing as an early member of the Amoskeag Rowing Club.

He is survived by his wife Tricia; his son Joshua and his wife Marie Harf; his daughter Anne Durham and her husband Tyler; his sister-in-law Barb Morray (Jeff); his niece and nephew, Caity and Brian Morray; and numerous cousins. The family is deeply grateful to Amanda Robertson, whose dedicated home care enabled Ned to remain at home through all but the last two months of his illness; the staff of The Birches in Concord and the Concord VNA who cared for and supported Ned during the last two months of his life; and the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice who eased his final days.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Goodwin Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 607 Chestnut Street, Manchester. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Brookside Congregational Church, UCC, 2013 Elm Street, Manchester. Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions can be made to Brookside Congregational Church, UCC, 2013 Elm Street, Manchester, NH 03104, or the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts/New Hampshire Chapter, 166 S. River Road, #210, Bedford, NH 03110.

Ned was my avuncular mentor almost forty years ago, when I was first learning about real estate and titles. He had a calm, grounded demeanor, and always had time to answer a question. Over the years, I've called him often, usually only when I've had a really tough question. My condolences to his family.

I have fond memories of working weekends with Ned during our service at the Attorney General's Office. Ned was a regular "weekend warrior" and would take breaks where we would theorize how to solve many of the world's problems. I also have fond memories of many wonderful concerts that I enjoyed with Ned and Tricia. Ned, Rest in Peace.

John was truly one of the "good guys." My contact with him was primarily in the real estate title business, and I don't know anyone who was more thorough than him when digging into and answering a question. I'm privileged to have known him, and hope that there are many happy memories to comfort you and your family in the days ahead.
