DERRY -- Kenneth Nadir Chowdry, 81, died Feb. 27, 2011, at Catholic Medical Center, Manchester, of heart failure.
He was born in Gujarat, India, on April 19, 1929, and his parents sent him to London to study to be a barrister. He attended Eton and the University of Cambridge.
He met his wife of 52 years, Gioconda Chowdry, in the subway in London. "It was love at first sight," she said. "He was so handsome."
They were married on March 14, 1958, and moved to the United States in 1969. He became a successful manufacturing plant manager in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Waterbury, Conn.
IN HIS LIFE: He became well-known as the "British tailor" who was proud of his work, which he first learned on Saville Row in London. He tailored clothing for everyone from movie stars to royalty and local community members in New England.
Family members include his wife of Derry; his son, Frank Chowdry, of Yarmouth, Maine; his daughter, Sara Abbotts, of York, Maine; and grandson, Philip Chowdry, of Yarmouth, Maine.
SERVICES: A memorial service will be Saturday, March 12, at 10 a.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas in Derry.
