Kenneth Gould Obituary

EXETER - Kenneth Hamilton Gould, a resident of Riverwoods in Exeter, died on Nov. 23, 2019, after a brief illness.

Born on Oct. 18, 1938, he was a lifelong resident of New Hampshire, growing up in Wolfeboro, raising a family in Derry, and living most recently in Kingston and Exeter.

Ken grew up skiing, sailing, and playing soccer, making the most of his home state's natural beauty. He especially loved his summers at Camp Belknap on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Ken was a middle child, with sisters who were six years older and six years younger. While that was a great divide when they were young, they all became good friends and traveling partners throughout the years. His older sister, Sylvia Denton, predeceased him, and he is survived by his younger sister, Jeanne Morrison.

Ken graduated from Brewster Academy and Babson College.

He was the longtime owner of Gould's Dime Stores, Inc., operating Ben Franklin stores in Derry and Milford.

For many years, Ken represented Derry in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. It was in the House that Ken met his loving wife, Selma, who survives him. They enjoyed 37 years together. Among many other activities, they enjoyed their combined seven grandsons and one granddaughter.

Ken was the loving father of Kristen Gould Burnham (Keith) and Lydia Gould Bessler (John), whom he shared with his first wife, the former Janet Gunter, who predeceased him. He was the proud grandfather of Evan Burnham, Gregory Burnham, and Saffron Bessler. He was also the loving stepfather of Brenda Clark, Karen LoPilato, and James Jackson.

Throughout his life, Ken worked in the public interest, supported meaningful social change, and volunteered to help his community.

SERVICES: A celebration of life will be held in early 2020 on a date to be determined.

Memorial donations may be made to Camp Belknap (www.campbelknap.org), a place of beauty, meaning, and fun that Ken loved dearly.

Very sorry to read in the UCC newsletter of Ken's passing. I knew Ken from when I lived in Derry and we were both active members at First Parish Church. After I moved back to Swanzey, I would always see Ken and Selma at NH Conference UCC events and looked forward to these times. I will so miss his presence at these events. Deepest sympathy to Selma and family.

So sorry to hear about Ken. He was our neighbor for almost 30 years in Derry and ALWAYS had a smile or kind word to say. Still think of him mowing his lawn or tending his garden. He was missed when he moved away and will now be forever missed. My heart goes out to all of you, but especially you Selma. It is never easy losing your partner but with all the wonderful memories you have of your life together, I hope and pray they will help you get through this difficult time. My sincerest condolences.

Selma and family,
Our biggest heartfelt hugs are with you all! Kens passing is a sorrowful loss to all whose path he crossed! Genuine, soulful, kind and bright in every way......yet oh so humble! It came so naturally to him! His soft smile and the twinkle in his eye will be readily recalled and sorely missed. Aunt Marge would speak so lovingly of Uncle Jesse's kids ......her and our New Hampshire cousins! Sylvia, Ken and Jeanne would be counted on to arrive in Maine for our reunions. They never let us down! Selma, you became one of us.......as you and Ken became one and the same! May precious memories sustain you all! Ken was truly a great guy!
With love ,

So sad to hear of Ken's passing. He's left a big void in the life of his family and many others. As a teenager, I had the pleasure of working for Ken at Ben Franklin's in Derry and actually babysat for his children when they were little. It was always nice to bump into him at the store, church or Riverwoods. He will be remembered fondly for the kind and gentle man he was.

Ken was a faithful member of First Parish Congregational Church, UCC, in East Derry for the last 43 years. He served God, his church and his community all the while being a devoted family man, ethical business man and conscientious public servant. There isn't enough space here to express all the ways that Ken made the world a better place. He was so respected and loved. He will be dearly missed.
