Mildred Bristol Obituary

MANCHESTER - Mildred Louise Johnson Bristol passed away on June 22, 2013, in the Manor at Birch Hill Terrace.

She was born in Manchester on Sept. 13, 1920, the eldest daughter of the late Carl Algot and Hannah Louise (Nillson) Johnson. Millie graduated from Manchester Central High School, class of 1938, and Hesser Business College, class of 1939. She began her secretarial career working for the American Fidelity Insurance Co., which became Granite State Insurance Co., which then became New Hampshire Insurance Group, from which she retired. Millie enjoyed being part of the retired women's group. Millie supported her children as well as her parents. She used her many talents for community activities. She was Girl Scout leader of Troop 374 at the Hanover Congregational Church and volunteered for the American Red Cross using her secretarial skills, as well as sewing dressing pads for hospitals. Millie was joined in marriage to Clark Bill Bristol on April 28, 1958. While Clark was district governor for Rotary District 787, Millie enjoyed performing secretarial duties for him. During those years they spent summers at Gerrish Island in Kittery Point, Maine, and were active founding members of the Gerrish Island Association. Millie served as secretary for many of those years as well as chairperson of their lobster/clam bake. Millie was a lifetime member of Bethany Covenant church and served in various capacities and committees. Her faith was unwavering and she exemplified it in her life. If there was someone in need she quietly helped them. Millie lived her faith every day. Millie loved to knit for her family and friends and many were blessed with those gifts. She loved to cook and shared that love with all she knew. Millie was a gifted painter and created many beautiful stenciled pieces for her family. She enjoyed gardening, freezing and canning her bounty, and tending to her flowers.

She is survived by a daughter, Susan J. Smith and husband "Jay" of Nobleboro, Maine; a son-in-law, Kenneth Newcomb of Grove City, Fla.; stepdaughters, Rosemary B. Bryden and husband Stanton of Bristol, Vt., and Ruth B. Merrill of Hampden, Maine; granddaughters, Dawn M. Rice and husband Pete of Manchester, Kristin (Mahoney) Prince and husband Rick Hubbard of Bedford, Candis S. Regan and husband Joseph of Portsmouth, Sarah S. Pierson and husband Branden of Falmouth, Maine, and Jessika R. Smith of Lanai, Hawaii; as well as many great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews for whom she cared very much.

Millie was predeceased by her loving husband of 27 years, Clark; daughter Carol L. Newcomb; sisters, Enid Charlotte J. Rosborough, Margit Christine J. "Peggy" Herrick; and cousin Ruth Elizabeth Lindstrom Fox.

The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers at the Manor at Birch Hill Terrace for their many gifts, kindness and quality care Millie received. Millie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends.
