GOFFSTOWN -- Nicholas Hamel, 20, died Aug. 15, 2009, in Catholic Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 10. 1988, in Nashua, the son of Donald and Lynda (Leach) Hamel. He lived his entire life in Goffstown and was a 2007 graduate of Goffstown High School.
He played baseball in the Goffstown Junior Baseball and the Goffstown Babe Ruth leagues. He loved skateboarding, snowboarding and golf, and lived life to its fullest.
Mr. Hamel will long be remembered for his ever-present smile, the ease in which he created and spread laughter, and his gentle-giant hugs. He touched the hearts of many and will never be forgotten.
The love of his family and friends meant everything to him.
The family, in addition to his parents, of Goffstown, includes two sisters, Erika and Kimberly Hamel, both of Goffstown; his maternal grandmother, Beverly A. Leach of Goffstown; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.
SERVICES: A memorial reception is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in French and Rising Funeral Home, 17 South Mast St., Goffstown. A private family burial is being planned for Westlawn Cemetery of Goffstown.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Hamel,
It is with a heavy heart we learn of the passing of your son, Nick. We did not know Nick personally, but it appears he mirrors his amazing sister Erika, who is the care taker of our two small children. We hope you find comfort in the memories of your son during this most difficult time.
With Sincere Sympathy,

Dear Don, Lynda, Erika and Kimberly,
Words cannot express how deeply sorry our family is at the loss of your beloved son. Nick was a regular around our household. Living so close to Goffstown High School, 48 Tyler Dr. became the place to gather after school at the end of our cul de sac. Nick was always polite and respectful and I even had him trained to take his shoes off when he came in! The smile is what I will remember and his soft spoken and sweet ways. He was a good friend to our son, Josh. He will be missed but not forgotten. Nick, may you rest in peace.
With Deepest Sympathy,
Tina, Jeff, and Josh Swett

There really are no words that anybody can say to take away the pain you feel in your hearts. I am deeply saddened to hear about Nick's passing away. I did not know him personally, but from what I do know- he was an amazing person with a huge heart. I am very sorry for your loss and your family will be in my prayers. RIP Nick.

Don,
We umpired many games together; and I learned a lot about the game of baseball from you. But your dedication to the kids is what impressed me the most. We are all a bit richer because of the sacrifices you and your family made for all of us. I thank you for that and wish you and your family the best in this most difficult time.

Dear Lynda and Don,
I was very saddened to hear of Nicholas' passing. I never knew him, but I'm sure he was a wonderful young man--and he had played ball and done those wonderful Goffstown activities. You have my deepest sympathy and please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
(I used to run into you after WW meetings in Hooksett and I had subbed at Mountainview in the early '00's).
With deepest sympathy,
Nancy R.

I learned of Nicholas' passing through a friend in your community who suggested I make contact you. Although I didn't know your son, I know something about the pain and loss you are experiencing. My 21 year old daughter died this past Father's Day. I wanted to let you know that you are not alone and that one of the best things a friend did for me was to connect me with Compassionate Friends. http://www.compassionatefriends.org/
Besides their online support, they have local chapters around the U.S.
There is nothing I can say to take away your pain, but please know that there are others of us who have also lost a child and that our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Many hugs,
Lisa D.

Don, Lynda, Erika and Kim,
It is with the most heavy of hearts and deepest of sorrow, that we learned of Nick's passing. Our blessings and prayers go out to all of you. Although nothing that we can say or do can bring Nick back to us, he will always remain in our hearts and memories.
We came to know the Hamel's through, what else, baseball as a member of the "Green Team"; Nick as a player and Don as a coach. Despite his quiet demeanor Nick was an incredibly respectful person and player. This is a testament to both of you Don and Lynda, and it was truly my pleasure to get to know Nick and be able to teach your fine son the essence of playing baseball and watching him develop as a fine young man through the years; from Farm League through our championship season with the Royals in Babe Ruth.
Prior to the Royal's season Nick joined Craig, Clff, Kory, and Nate (all future Royals), along with Brandon Macek, Tom MacDonald and Eric Badasarian in learning the fine art of hitting by attending Butch Hobson's hitting clinics at the Allard Barn. To this day I remember Butch quoting that "Nick would be the "horse" that we'd ride to the championship". How prophetic, despite his lack of early season success, Nick triumphed by hitting a blast that is still traveling to this day. The smile that ensued on his face is something that I'll carry with me forever,as his perseverance finally paid off; perhaps Nick and Cliff are playing catch with that moonshot baseball in heaven today.
To this day both Pete and I use that memory of Nick's persistence to teach others to overcome the adversity that is baseball and life. As a result Nick will live within every player going forward.
Please take solace in the fact that the tears we shed are those of fondness as we will never see that ear to ear smile that he so proudly displayed each time we saw him whether it was on or off the field.
He is greatly missed!
All our love,
David, Joann, Meagan and Craig

nick,
i met you because you worked at subway and i was always going there for food. every time i went in and saw you i'd get the biggest smile on my face. you'd always be so friendly and i thought you were the cutest boy alive. but i was always way to shy to every talk to you a lot. then we had a run in at the shell station, and from then on we started talking. we were saying how the next time we ran into eachother we were going to stop being so shy because both of us were... but, we never got that run in.. but i know that we will again someday, and this time, i wont be shy. i promise.
rest in peace subway guy.

Nick,
The nicest person I have ever met, how could you have always been so happy? You were always up for anything, like coming outside of your job at Subway to skate with Stevey and I. You knew how to make the people around you happy as well as yourself. I still remember the first time I met you at the Y skatepark and thinking, " How is a kid that big so good at skating?" haha. You will never ever be forgotton and my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

From a teacher long ago -
Dear Hamel Family -
I was Nick's 9th grade science teacher at Goffstown.
I don't remember most of my students, but Nick I remember. He was sweet and observant, a Good Heart in the making. His passing is tragic.
My heart goes out to all of you. I can't imagine how I would stand up to such a loss. I pray for your strength in this difficult time.
God bless you.

Hamel Family you have been in our thoughts everyday this week we have all had our very quiet moments to ourselves to reflect on our memories of Nick.
Peter and I were talking and a memory that sticks out most to all of us was the day Nick had hit a home run at Mountainview Middle School when he played on the championship Babe Ruth team for the Royals. The First thing that came to mind was.... Don the proud Dad just watching it go out then proudly running down the left field line to go get the ball. The smile that Nick had on his face as he came around third base giving Pete a High Five is as vivid as if it were yesterday.
Nick although very quiet was never short of having that huge smile on his face.
We all keep Nick close in our heart and know that Cliff and Nick will be throwing the ball around on the best field ever.
God Bless

To Nick's Family
We cannot begin to express how deeply saddened we are of Nick's death. Try to find some comfort in knowing that Nick was loved wherever he went and by whomever he met. We will miss his warm greetings and large smile as he entered our home, kicking off his sneaks at the door so as not to drag anything in on his soles, and his never ending warm friendship. He was a good guy and good friend to both of our sons and to countless others. We will always keep Nick in our thoughts, but more importantly, we hope that you find some comfort in knowing that we share your pain and that we loved Nick. We will miss him greatly.

Don and Linda -
I cannot find quite the right words to express the sorrow and pain that I feel for you and your daughters. I only had the chance to meet Nick once but it was clear from that brief encounter that he had the same larger than life personality as his Dad.
God bless, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

If tears could build a stairway,

And only God knows why.

Nick, My teddy bear, you were like a second brother to me. You were the first one to jump in and cheer me up if I was ever having a hard day... and to think I am never going to get another hug and twirl around in your loving arms is the hardest thing for me to imagine. Your heart was so big it touched all those around you, the love that you had for everyone showed through your beautiful blue eyes. You were, you are, one of the funniest, kindest, loving human beings I have ever meet. I love you and will miss you forever, rest in peace Nick, you will not be forgotten.

Nick Hamel. I knew you well since senior year in High School. We shared some fun times. Your undying love for music was always something we could talk about. Countless cruises in your car listening to new tunes. Many nights in my basement playing some funky beats on my set for you to listen to. I went through some rough times my freshman year in college, and when you were around, you always made my life seems 10x better. I don't know how you did it. You were the friendliest, down to earth kid i've ever met. Always happy. Having you come visit at Plymouth was always a great experience for everyone. My only wish is that you would have talked to somebody about this. I hope you like everyone's tattoo. I will love you forever and never forget you. You had a big impact on my life. My deepest sympathies for the Hamel Family. You could not have raised a more amazing kid.

I am terribily sorry to hear what has happened and i want you to know that i send my greatest hopes to the two of you. Nick was one of the very few people who could always put a smile on my face no matter what situation or time we were in. I will never forget the skateboarding days when Nick would be outside skateboarding sweating and sweating but never stopping and just having a great time with us. I will always remember what he did for me as a young kid coming into the high school and as an older kid coming out of it. My heart is there for you two, stay strong and peaceful. Nick, much love forever and ever. Never Forgotten EVER. SKEEOOO AND CASUALLL i know you will always hear them man.

Nick,
I'm thinking about all those days hanging out after school, watching while you all skateboarded or did a number of other crazy stunts. You were a special part of all of your friends because you were always there for everyone around you as a true best friend. You were one of a kind and so genuine in everything- just to look into your bright blue eyes and feel the warmth of your big smile and unforgettable hug, I know that you loved with so much. As one of your friends, I hope that you know we all love you and will never forget your smiles, laughter, jokes... you will be with us forever. I would give anything for one more bear hug. I miss you Nick, I will never forget.
