Nicholas Kalfas Obituary

Nicholas S. Kalfas, 76, of Alton, NH passed away peacefully on Monday, August 1, 2022 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital with his wife and daughter by his side. Nick is survived by his wife, Maureen; his daughter, Leah LaRose; his son-in-law, Ken LaRose; his two grandchildren, Evie and Harrison LaRose; his brother-in-law Dan Leach; his nephew Ryan Leach, his wife, Chrissy, and daughter, Molly. He also has many relatives still in Greece, from where his parents emigrated. Nick was born on December 8, 1945 to Soterios and Soultana (Vourvoutsiotis) Kalfas of Laconia, NH. He grew up in the Lakes Region, attending Laconia High School and Belknap College. He was an avid skier who loved talking about his days as a ski patrolman at Wildcat Mountain. In 1970, he married Maureen Leach and they moved to Arizona to attend graduate school, Nick earning a PhD in clinical psychology. After school, they settled in Alton, NH to be close to the lake. Nick spent most of his career working for the state of NH and also maintained a private clinical practice. But his favorite job was being the right-hand man to Maureen's antique business. Outside of work, he devoted over 40 years to the Alton fire department. Nick was a dedicated father and grandfather, a loving and patient husband and a wonderfully kind friend. He loved to go boating, cook delicious Greek food for family and friends, rescue Doberman Pinschers, and travel. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. At this time there are no services planned. Later in the summer, there will be a celebration of Nick's life, which will be held by the lake. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations may be made to Pope Memorial SPCA of Concord, 94 Silk Farm Rd, Concord, NH 03301, as one of his favorite Dobermans, Addie, was adopted from there. Arrangements are under the direction of Purdy Funeral Service of Dover, NH. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.purdyfuneralservice.com

I worked with Nick from 1994-2005- he was the treasurer of NHPA and he was a joy and pleasure to know. He had a distinct personality and was such a kind soul underneath his "gruff" exterior. I have thought about him a lot over the years and I remember how very much he loved his daughter. He was a special person, I feel lucky to have known for a period of my life. Sending best wishes to his family.

Nick was a colleague who also did his private practice from my office. He and I always had a joke at hand as he never took life too seriously. We also had a great time discussing different foods and restaurants. Always a good friend. You will be missed.

Nick was the APA Disaster Response Network Chair when I first started volunteering for the Red Cross. On my first deployment 30 years ago (before Cell phones) at Hurricane Andrew, he tracked me down several times to make sure I was OK. He also said to something that I still remember and have often quoted. "You´re a volunteer. If you can go, get moving. If you can´t, say no and don´t give long explanations. They need to call the next person." He left a legacy affecting many lives.

Dr. Kalfas was a fixture at DDS. He shared his clinical knowledge as well as his knowledge of the program principles. He sparked lively conversation, and subtly pulled a couple of pranks over the years. His baklava, which he shared around holidays, was unforgetable. He made a lasting impression. My sincere sympathies to his family.

MaryJane and I offer our sincere condolences to Maureen and Leah and the rest of Nick's extended family. Hearing of his passing was so sad. I learned so much from Nick in our work together and counted on him for advice and as someone I could talk to about whatever was on my mind. He was a wise and benevolent soul. He will be sorely missed.

It was 28 years ago that Nick sat down with me and asked if I would come" inhouse" and stop being in the "outhouse". I took him up on his offer and I have never regretted it. It has been a pleasure to have worked with Nick all these years, but he and Maureen were also good friends. Nick's knowledge of the Social Security Disability system will be missed, but more than that, his friendship and his baklava!! No more pain Nick. RIP.
