Coach Champeau was a role model throughout my life. I remember how I stopped by to say hello to him in May 1977. I told him that I had just graduated from medical school and that I was on my way to California to start my anesthesia residency at Stanford. He said wow that is a lot of water under the bridge. Coach Champeau instilled in me a love of swimming like no other coach. He will be missed by all.

Norm was my swim coach at Brighton High from 1966-1969. My brother, Rick, also swam for Norm. I am certain that two of the most memorable swim seasons for Norm as a coach were 1968 and 1969, much to the dismay of our arch rivals; the vaunted Pittsford finmen.

Norm did have nicknames for many of his students and athletes. He called me "YaYa," in remembrance of a certain song, and knowing that New York Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle was a personal favorite.
I also remember Norm's girls at practice on Saturday mornings. Their mom, Bonnie, was frequently busy changing diapers in the stands. He was proud of them all, as they were of him.

On behalf of my brother Rick and myself; our sincere condolences to the entire Champeau family. Norm will be greatly missed by many Brighton friends, students, and athletes.

The Coach & His Captains

If we're fortunate, we may have a very few true mentors in our lives. Coach was surely one of mine.

Norm taught us what sport (swimming) was truly about, and by extension, how one should live one's life - lessons learned over time, remembering/realizing "how we got here, where we came from."

We all loved him, unconditionally, like the young pups we were. He gave approval in an understated way that made you feel you could do even better...and would, with him at the helm.

"...there'll be other 23.1's," he wrote in my yearbook, 50 years ago, "but never a better use of one's potential than you displayed." That says it all.

So many others like me, who followed under his tutelage, and in his daily life, are surely saddened by his passing. Yet we're also blessed by his enduring spirit, the confidence he instilled in us, and the happy memories we shared while striving for a common purpose.

Love you, Coach

I still think of Mr. Champeau when I do yoga. He was the first person to teach me how to do a salute to the sun--must have been third grade or something, but I still remember it and am grateful!
