Salvatore Scali Obituary

Salvatore T. Scali, 77, of Merrimack, NH, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday March 13th, 2025, after a recent illness, having a long history of severe emphysema. Known to close family and friends as "Big Larry" due to his devoted fandom of the Boston Celtics, Sal was born in the commune of Grotteria, in the Province of Reggio Calabria in Italy, to his late parents, Fortunato and Rosa Maria (née Belcastro) Scali. After immigrating to the United States in 1954, he grew up in Boston's North End. At age 19, he was drafted and served as a combat mechanized infantryman in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his military service, he had a distinguished career in the U.S. Army before retiring and later worked for the United States Postal Service. In addition to his parents, "Big Larry" was predeceased by his two brothers, Joseph and Rocco Scali, and a sister, Elizabeth Scali. He is survived by his two daughters, Lisa Scali and Nicole Scali-Monnelly and her husband, Andrew; his son, Salvatore Scali and his wife Colleen Digman; his loving former spouse, Marie Scali; six grandchildren, Lauren Acres and Jesse Parsons, Samantha and Sadie Scali, and Connor and Marissa Monnelly; two great grandchildren, Cassiel Acres and Athena Parsons; two sisters, Albina Bruzzese and Maria Perna; and a brother, Tony Scali, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 24th, 2025, from 4 - 7 PM at the Rivet Funeral Home located at 425 Daniel Webster Highway in Merrimack, NH. Lisa, Nicole and Salvatore, please accept the condolences of the Troopers of the 11th Armored Cavalry's veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia. Sal was a dedicated and courageous warrior, one of us, one of our own. He served courageously with the Legendary Blackhorse Regiment, and surely he was nicknamed in the field as "Spaghetti." Your father will be remembered as an honorable trooper whose very presence brought comfort and support to his fellow troopers. He will be included on the Honor Role of our combat veterans as his service highlighted his bravery and valor and was guided with a Purple Heart and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. As grateful Americans we should all pause and salute a man who was willing to put his life on the line for his country. As our Funeral Mass burial liturgy states: “ his life has not ended, merely changed ..." and as we were together then in Vietnam, we will be together again in the life hereafter, warmly embraced in the arms of our Heavenly Father. Chaplain Bill, 11th ACVVC (Vietnam 71-72)
