MANCHESTER -- Spyros W. "Milo" Zarakotas, 83, died June 11, 2009, at Bedford Hills Healthcare Center, after a long illness.
He was born in Manchester on March 13, 1926, to Vasilios and Phrosine (Joanou) Zarakotas, and was a lifelong resident of the city.
During World War II and the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Guam and Okinawa, and was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in Korea at the Chosin Reservoir. He was also awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Medal and the Victory Medal.
Mr. Zarakotas worked for the U.S. Postal Service for many years.
He was a member of the Elite Chosin Few, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.
Family includes his wife of 49 years, Virginia (Legenc) Zarakotas of Manchester; stepson Philip Legenc of Pompano Beach, Fla.; brothers Gregory Zarakotas of Manchester and Vaios Zarakotas of Lowell, Mass.
IN HIS LIFE: The family also includes a nephew, William Zarakotas, and two nieces, Judith Zarakotas and Angela Zarakotas. He was predeceased by a brother, Stephen Zarakotas and two sisters, Madeline Zarakotas and Stavrula Zarakotas.
SERVICES: Calling hours are Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., with a Trisagion Service at 3 p.m. at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., corner of North Street. The funeral is Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 111 Island Pond Road. The Rev. Athanasios Nenes will officiate. Committal prayers will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Calef Road.
