William Lamotte Obituary

William Joseph Lamotte, "Wild Bill," passed away early Sunday morning, Feb. 13, 2022, after a brief illness surrounded by his family.

William was born in Lancaster, N.H., on Aug. 23, 1934, to Eugene and Emily Lamotte.

William is survived by his four sons, William, Douglas, Adam and Nathan; his two sisters, Margaret Gonyer of Lunenburg, Vt., and Mary Bovat of Lilliam, Ala.; his extended family of Brian Harriman and Jon Burgess; numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his beloved cat FBI.

William was a lifelong New England sports fan. Prior to retirement, he had owned and operated Lamotte Fence Co., Lamotte Trucking and was a proud member of local 668. He was predeceased by his wife Karen, daughter Elizabeth and brothers Arthur and John.

In his early life, William played football, baseball, was an accomplished amateur boxer and martial artist. After completing his education in Vermont, Bill joined the USAF and proudly served in the Korean conflict. While serving, Bill and others were taken prisoner by the North Korean army while on patrol. After being a P.O.W for 40 days, Bill and two other soldiers escaped the camp. During the escape, one soldier was wounded, but was carried away by Bill and the other soldier. Unfortunately, the wounded man passed away days later, shortly before they came upon Australian and American soldiers on patrol. At the request of the deceased soldier's brother, who was a high-ranking officer, William and the other soldier were awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

Bill was a father to some, a friend to most and a legend to all that had to pleasure to know him.

Private services will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Merrimack Community Hospice House.

I am so very sorry to hear of your father/grandfather's passing. I had the pleasure of knowing and serving Mr. Lamotte for the last year through MOW. He was always very friendly and I looked forward to our short visits. I never knew of his POW status although he did speak of serving in Korea. He is missed by all of us here. Prayers to all of your family.
