ST. PARIS – Gary J. Dowty, 67, a lifelong resident of St. Paris, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Saturday March 8, 2025.
Gary graduated from Graham High School in 1976. He was a (THE) Johnson Township Trustee and served his township for 16 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church in St. Paris, Ohio. He was an active member of the Moose Lodge 1215 and VFW 5451 in Urbana. He loved his community where he was extremely active. He was an avid antique and car collector/enthusiast. He was always there to lend a helping hand with a heart of gold.
He is survived by his siblings, James Dowty, Richard Dowty, Jane Dowty, Larry Dowty (Marilyn), Suzy Dowty Anderson (Ramona Pitsinger); nieces Cheryl Dowty Smith, Julie Grimes (Matt), Brandy (Elwin) Bailey, Murissa Hahn, and Christian Young; nephews Greg (Michelle) Dowty, David Dowty (Diana), Rob (Heather) Dowty, Jakob Young, and Logan Pitsinger along with several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond "Pete" Dowty and Betty (Thorpe), his brother Douglas Dowty, and nephew Kurt Dowty.
Visitation for friends and family will be held on Sunday, March 16 from 2-5 p.m. at ATKINS, SHIVELY & VERNON FUNERAL HOME located at 216 S. Springfield Street, St. Paris, Ohio 43072.
Memorial graveside services will be held on Monday, March 17 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, St. Paris, Ohio.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Gary's life following graveside services on Monday at the Evans-Purk Building, 103 S. Church, St. Paris Ohio 43072. Food will be provided by the Lutheran Church (food donations will also be accepted).
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made directly to Vernon Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.vernonfh.com.
