He was born on Feb. 14, 1943 in London, Ohio, the son of Herschel Sr. and Mary (Herman) Byrd.
Herschel lived his life proudly serving the Lord and the United States Navy. He was an active member of the Ministerial Association and started preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in 1976. He is preceded in death by his parents, his grandson, Troy Byrd; his sisters, Evelyn Scurry and Coralee Byrd; as well as his brothers Alfred Wilson, Richard Byrd, Harold Byrd, and James Byrd.
The family thanks their neighbors with the care and concern about Reverend Herschel Byrd and the family. Thank you to the Springfield Regional Hospital for all the genuine care they gave my husband and the family and thank you to the Urbana Answering Service for the help to Dimitira Byrd and family.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m.-noon on Friday, Feb. 7, 2025 in VERNON FUNERAL HOME, Urbana.
Home going service will be held privately at the family's convenience with Reverend Keith Wilson officiating the going home of our brother Reverend Herschel.
Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Urbana, where military honors will be provided by the United States Navy and American Legion Post 120 firing squad.

Herschel was a classmate and great friend for life as we talked on phone and had lunch many of times with other classmates. Herschel believed in God and preached his words. We always had a good time talking and laughing bout life in the 50´s . He will be missed and I will miss lunch time with him and our buddies. God bless my friend.

We have been neighbors for years. I always enjoyed talking to him, I think we solved quite a few of the world's problems. I think the thing I will miss the most is watching him on his John Deere taking care of his yard, he set the example for the rest of the neighborhood. He will be missed.
