James Bennett Obituary

IRWIN - James "Jim" Bennett, 92, of Irwin, died Monday afternoon, March 28th at his home surrounded by his loving and devoted family after months of failing health.

A 1950 graduate of Mechanicsburg High School, Jim met his wife Norma in the 7th grade. Together, they owned and operated Bennett's Grocery in Irwin for over 50 years, and Bennett's Billiard Parlor in Irwin for 20 years. Jim was a collector of many things such as "See No Evil" memorabilia, skunks, Popeye, M&M's, bikes and motorcycles, which he loved to ride. He also enjoyed playing pool.

He was a member of the Cushman Scooter Club as well as the Brit Club where he and Norma made many good friends in years past. The family would like to thank each of those friends for all the kindness they have shown Jim during his last few years.

Jim was born February 21, 1930 in Newport to the late Sheridan and Annabel (Bailey) Bennett. He married the former Norma Jean Meeks in 1950 in Richmond, Indiana. She preceded him in death on September 17, 2017 after 67 years of marriage.

He is survived by his daughter Teresa (Duane) Hodges of Marysville; grandsons Matthew (Shavon) Hodges of Ashville, Jim (Jamie) Hodges of Midlothian, Virginia, and Nick (Ashley) Hodges of Marysville; great-grandchildren Hayden, Lauren, Ethan, Jackson, Abigail, Rivers, Harrison and Beck; sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Kenny Martindale of Irwin who were dedicated, daily caregivers and companions to Jim after Norma died; beloved nieces Trudy (Dwight) Shoemaker and Julie Brooks; devoted and loving caregivers Samantha and Kirk Kirts; and special friends Jack (Pam) Ray and Clara Headings as well as many other lifelong friends.

A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, April 6 from 3-5 p.m. at the INGRAM FUNERAL HOME, where a small Celebration of Life service will be held following hours with Dr. Nelson Perdue officiating. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ingramfuneralservice.com.

Dear Teresa and Family,

Please accept my deepest condolences for Jim's passing. He was a very kind, generous, and energetic man; and honestly, it's hard to believe that he's not at his home in Irwin right now. Jim and Norma were great friends of my parents, Irv and Carole Runkle. Now, I just know that they are all together again having a wonderful time in Heaven.

Wishing you peace and comfort during this holiday season,

Lori

To Teresa and Family, was so sorry to hear about your Dad and Grandchildren hearing that Jim passed. Bob passed away in February. Jim & Norma was truly loved by us. Jim always knew a face wherever he would go. We just loved them and will remember the beautiful memories we had with them playing pool, cards and the many place we went together.
Such a great lose and was sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I wish I had known. He & Norma are truly missed. Love to all..Bob & Sandy Estheimer
