Charles Cresswell Obituary

Charles Stephen Cresswell
Wyoming/New York
Stephen Cresswell, 74, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, after losing his battle with cancer, on Friday, March 18, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospice, Tucson, AZ. He was born on June 7, 1936, in Utica, NY, to Roger William Cresswell and Margaret Julia Rieben Cresswell. He grew up in Clinton, NY, and graduated from Clinton High School, where he played football and hockey. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 33 years, retiring in June of 1991. On April 11, 1992, he married Valerie Robischon Bennett. They moved west to Cody, WY, worked in Yellowstone National Park and built a home in Wapiti, WY. Stephen also worked in the Shoshone National Forest and, for many years, at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody. He loved to tell people about the center and how wonderful it was to visit. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #1097, Oriskany Falls, NY, and the Cody Elks Lodge #1611. He enjoyed hunting game in the New York Adirondacks and Maine, moose in Alaska, caribou in Labrador, and pronghorn and elk in Wyoming. He also enjoyed fishing on the coast of Texas, as well as dove and quail hunting around Tucson, AZ. Stephen is survived by his wife, Valerie; his sister, Barbara Markey; nephews, Stephen (Sharon) Markey and William (Nicole) Markey; nieces, Margaret (Mark) Corey and Ann (Martin) Proty; his brother, Roger W. (Barbara) Cresswell; nieces, Cynthia (Matthew) DeCotis and Bonnie (Richard) Maxam; stepchildren, David (Colleen) Bennett and Deborah (Joseph) Butler; and many cousins, great-nephews, great-nieces and grandchildren. Stephen was predeceased by his first wife of 24 years, Joan Sadie Freeman, on February 26, 1983, and his brother-in-law, Joseph H. Markey, on March 3, 2011. He leaves many wonderful friends, neighbors, co-workers and hunting partners in different states. He was by all measures a very thoughtful, caring, good man who will be dearly missed. There will be memorial services in Wyoming at Wapiti Valley Church, Wapiti, on a date to be announced and in New York at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Home in Clinton on Saturday, June 4, 2011, at 1 p.m. Memorial donations may be sent to Wapiti Valley Church, P.O. Box 181, Wapiti, WY 82450. "The Angels in Heaven hear his footprints now."

"Steve," as his coworkers from Clinton Post Office knew him, was a very kind and decent man. I was blessed with the opportunity to work with Steve for seven years and joined him a couple times deer hunting.

My Warmest Condolences to all of Steve's Family! He will be greatly missed.
