During the two-plus decades (1980-2001) that I actively participated within the Disability Rights Movement in Oneida County, I worked closely with Doris and her late husband Don. Doris proved unwavering in her advocacy. She is responsible for the creation of community-based supports/services that daily benefit numerous persons with disabilities. Doris was a selfless, tireless, and courageous advocate. Her breadth of knowledge regarding the myriad topics/issues that daily impact persons with disabilities was enormous. I met Don while a student at Utica College. He possessed many redeeming qualities and his knack for repairing wheelchairs meant a great deal to the folks who were helped by his interest in enhancing the life situations of people in need. He gave free-of-charge countless wheelchairs to people who required them for mobility, yet had no insurance or monetary means of purchasing and/or repairing their own wheelchairs. In this world of too many strangers, we need more good and decent people like Doris and Don. God bless their families/friends.
