Francis Ucher, a longtime Utica resident, passed away Monday, July 30, 2012, at the Masonic Care Community. He was born in Utica, the son of Joseph and Viktoria Zagurski Ucher, and was raised in Poland. Francis was a survivor of WW II, having been a prisoner of war in a concentration camp. On August 28, 1948, he married Mary Hanus in Holy Trinity Church, Utica; she died on April 5, 2002. He was employed with the General Electric Co. for over 25 years until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, the G.E. Hall of Fame and the 11th Ward Fish & Game Club, where he often caught the largest fish and won awards. Frank was also an accomplished gardener. His survivors include his daughters, Charlotte and her husband, Douglas Maeder, of Delmar, NY, and Jane Shulkin, of Poughkeepsie, NY, and Richard Shulkin, of Newburg, NY; five grandchildren and their spouses, Christopher and Diane Maeder, of CA, Michele and Daniel Saxe, of Glenmont, NY, Valerie and Kevin O'Reilly, of Kirkville, Stephen and Maryann Shulkin, of Ghent, NY, and Deanna and Douglas Morrice, of Austin, TX; 13 great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Matthew O'Reilly, Courtney and Justin Maeder, Timothy Saxe, Marybeth, Annabel, David and Catherine Morrice, and Savanah, Madison, Austin and Phoenix Shulkin; and several nieces and nephews in MA. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Breslow and Alida Kosinski for their care and assistance over the years. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Kowalczyk Funeral Home, 1156 Lincoln Avenue, Utica, and at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday (today) from 4 until 6 p.m. Entombment will take place in the Resurrection Chapel of Holy Trinity Cemetery.
