James B. Hickey

James B. Hickey, 91 of Leesburg, FL, formerly of Camden, passed away June 21, 2008 at Hospice of Lake Sumter with family members at his side. He was born October 10, 1916 in Palmyra, NY, a son of Maurice and Ethel Whiting Hickey. He graduated from Palmyra Schools in 1934 and Indiana Tech. in Fort Wayne, IN where he received two Bachelor Degrees in Radio & Electrical Engineering. Jim later received his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army Air Corps from 1942 ' 1945. Jim retired in 1974 after working in the Product Development Section of the Electronic Warfare Laboratory at Rome Air Development Center, Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome. In 1955 he received recognition for several pieces of equipment that he invented and patented for the government, one of which was the delay line that is still used in the infamous 'Black Box' today. Jim was a life member of the American Legion, Arthur S. Moran Post #66 Camden, where he served as Commander, and a member of the Oneida Co. 40 & 8, serving as Chef de Gar in 1985. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a life member of the NRA, a certified instructor of the NYS Hunter Training Course, a charter member and officer of the National Muzzle Loader's Assoc. and president of the Mohawk Valley Muzzle Loader's Assoc. Jim was a founding member of the Camden Rod and Gun Club. He was also a member of the Electronics Bowling League, Rome and the Mid Florida Lakes Yacht & Horseshoe Club. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis; daughters, Elaine and Robert Morey, Karen and Arthur Ross both of FL, Debra and Raymond Pelow, Constantia, Janet and Richard Yuill, TN, and Lorie and Todd Fischer, Union Springs; sons, Eugene and Linda Hickey, FL, David and Keri Hickey, IA; step-daughters, Martha Watson, MN, Nancy and Paul Mahle, MI, Kimberly and John Roser, Liverpool, Susan Voelkers, VA; brother, Gerald and Tina Hickey, Palmyra; sister-in-law, Arleeda Hickey, FL; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the LaRobardiere Funeral Home. Calling hours Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home, 109 Main Street, Camden. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Camden Rod and Gun Club or the American Legion Arthur S. Moran Post #66, Camden.
