John Marcus Herrick Remsen
John Marcus Herrick, of Remsen, went home to be with the Lord on January 13, 2009. He passed peacefully into his Father's arms with his beloved family by his side. John was born on January 16, 1934, in South Trenton to John M. and Helen G. Schoen Herrick. He grew up in Utica and Prospect and in 1948 settled in Remsen. He attended schools in Utica and Prospect and graduated from Remsen Central School in 1953. While attending school in Remsen, John met the love of his life, Nancy Stacy. They were married on November 14, 1953, in the Remsen United Methodist Church. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Upon his high school graduation, John went to work for the Bendix Corporation. He also was employed by the Dairymen's League in Remsen. In 1960, he became the owner and operator of a wholesale/retail milk route selling Craeg Manor Farms products. In 1980, John went to work at Mapledale Market as a professional baker. He went on to work for Hemstrought's Bakery and Hamilton College. He retired, but not really… He enjoyed working for and with his dear friend, Tom Kingston, of Sunset Carpentry. John was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Prospect, where he served as a Deacon. He was a man of great faith and was devoted to his Lord's service. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Terri Judycki, of Remsen; his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Raymond Hamlin, of Remsen; his daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Eric Reiling, of Herkimer; his beloved grandchildren, Brandon Hamlin, of St. Louis, MO, Lindsey and Matthew Judycki, of Remsen, Mallory and Stephen Smith, of Green Island, and Lukas and Jacob Reiling, of Herkimer; his mother-in-law, Doris Stacy, of Remsen; his sister-in-law, Betty Herrick Andrew, of Old Forge; his brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Reiko Stacy, of Remsen, Francis and Bonnie Stacy, of Remsen, and Karen and Michael Rotach, of Vernon; and his aunt and uncle, Margie and Robert Stacy, of Tulsa, OK. He is also survived by several cousins, his nieces and nephews, and many special friends. John was predeceased by his sisters, Helendoretta Herrick Rice and Lillian Herrick Postol; his brother, Albert Herrick; and his son-in-law, Donald Judycki. John was an extraordinary man of great wisdom, compassion and faith. He will be truly missed by those privileged to know him. He had a great passion for gardening with his gardening companion, Heike. No doubt there will be plans for a spectacular garden in heaven this spring! John enjoyed his friendship with John Cordsen, USMC retired Vietnam veteran. As a veteran of the United States Navy, he understood the sacrifice of our men and women who have served and are presently serving their country for the love of the freedoms our Constitution provides. John Cordsen is the epitome of an American hero. John's funeral will take place on Saturday, January 17, 2009, at 4:00 PM at Bethel Baptist Church, 215 Church Street in Prospect. Friends and relatives may greet the family at the church from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on the 17th. Memorial contributions may be made in John's name to the Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund or to the New Hope Education Fund, a ministry supporting a mission for homeless children in Peru, South America. John's funeral will be conducted by his Pastor and friend, Dick Pardi. The family wishes to thank Pastor Pardi and his wife, Paula, for their friendship and spiritual guidance. John could not have come home from the hospital had it not been for the enormous efforts of his family. The love and devotion witnessed during his illness by his wife, his daughters and sons-in-law, and his extraordinary grandchildren are a testament to the true meaning of family. The family would like to thank John's caregivers, the Bethel Baptist Church family, and his family and friends. Your prayers, thoughtfulness and compassion through John's courageous battle against pancreatic cancer are most appreciated. Ackley-Mills Funeral Home, Remsen, is entrusted with arrangements.
