Michael Excell Obituary

Michael W. Excell 1970 - 2018
NEW HARTFORD - Michael W. Excell, 48, passed away on May 17, 2018, after his fierce and courageous battle with cancer, at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, with his loving family by his side.
Mike was born, March 31, 1970, in New Hartford, a son of David J. Excell and the late Judith F. Sparks Excell. He received his education in Utica Schools and earned his baccalaureate degree in Engineering from SUNY IT. On August 12, 2000, Mike married his soul mate and love of his life, Michele Malagese, at Historic Old St. John's Church, Utica and was blessed with two wonderful children who meant the world to him. Mike was employed as an engineer with the NY State Power Authority in Marcy.
Mike was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He enjoyed music, playing guitar and was a proud member of the Queensryche fan club, attending many of their shows.
He cherished the good times he spent with family and friends, especially traveling and vacations with Michele and their children. Mike was loved by all who met him and would always put a smile on on your face.
He is survived by his wife, Michele; children, Olivia and Daniel; father, David J. Excell, Sr.; siblings, Donna McGovern, David Excell, Jr., Sherree Williams and husband Mark and Thomas Excell and wife Darsel; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Vilroy Malagese; sister-in-law, Melissa Maiolo; brother-in-law, John Malagese and wife, Amy; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Judith Sparks Excell, on October 16, 2013.
Mike and Michele would like to send a special thank you to Pete Hayes, Rob Kirkwood, Rob Alberico, Sean O'Neill, Frank Gerace, Scott and Danelle Trotta, Enessa Carbone and Sal Raspante and Christine and Kevin Martin, for their great friendship and support throughout Mike's illness.

To Mike and Michele's beautiful children:

My prayer for you is that through this hardship and any life hardship, you remember your Father's love--and when you are parents someday yourselves, you'll see that from near or far, from this life or the next, a parent's love for their children never ever ends. It feels impossible--but moments like this in life have a special way of building us. And as you grow, you will never be without your Father's love. When our loved ones pass on, we can't see them in the old ways. But, we feel their love around us in many new ways. Trust that your Dad watches over you with God. It wouldn't be Heaven if a parent couldn't still watch over their children and help them grow. And so, trust that he can and that he will still be in your lives very much so. And even from Heaven, he will find his own ways to show you his love. Lean into your struggles, and know in your heart that you will grow. You will smile again. Your Dad is proud of who you are now and he will be proud of who you become throughout your lives. And he will be by your side through all of it. Every smile. Every tear. Every laugh. Every breath-taking sunset and sunrise that you somehow can't look away from.

Hugs and love to both of you and your Mom,

Love, -One of Mike's NYPA co-workers

To Michelle, the children, and the rest of Mike's loved ones,

I am so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I have known him since we were in seventh grade together, and he has always been a friend. It is very hard to put into words the sympathy you feel when someone this young is taken, but Mike was a great guy who kept those around him entertained and laughing. My heart goes out to all of you, and I hope that you all will work hard to keep my spirit alive. He will be missed by not only your family, but those who have had the pleasure of knowing him. May God bless you all.

Sincerely,
Mike Fanelli.

I ran into Mike in Albany at a restaurant a couple years ago before a concert. Had not seen him since high school but he was the same exuberant, good natured guy I remembered and we had a nice chat. He was in town for work and didn't know about the concert but went last minute and had a blast, we met up during intermission. Was sad to hear of his illness sometime later. The Cavallo's benefit was a true testament to how much he was loved by the people who's lives he touched. My deepest condolences to his family. Rock On Mike, Rock On!
