Mr. Michael F. Fanelli, age 79, of Utica, passed away on Saturday October 5, 2013, at the Siegenthaler Center, with his beloved family by his side. He was born to George M. and Margaret Whalen Fanelli Convertino November 6, 1933. Mike attended Utica schools graduating from T.R. Proctor High School as president of his senior class in 1951. He furthered his education with a Masters Degree in Education from Springfield College and a Masters Degree in Social Work from Syracuse University. Most of his work was in the field of Human Services which included Oneida County Dept. of Social Services, Oneida County Adult Probation Dept., and NYS Youth Parole. After 18 years he retired as a Mental Health Treatment Team Leader in 1988 from Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center. Throughout the 60s and 70s he taught gymnastics at the Utica YMCA. He also coached Varsity Track and Gymnastics at Proctor H.S. A self taught pianist, Mike played at many variety shows and social engagements throughout the area. During his retirement years he enjoyed opera and classical music. At one time he was married to Helen Pierog Fanelli. Survivors include his three children, Anne Marie Fanelli, Michael S. and Paul G. Fanelli, all of Clinton; and many nieces, nephews, step siblings, cousins, and a host of close friends. He was predeceased by a brother, George Fanelli, his sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Joseph Schafer, and his stepfather, John Convertino. At Mikes request there will be no public visiting hours. Private funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family, with burial in the family plot in St. Agnes Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the medical and support staff of St. Lukes Hospital, Slocum-Dickson Medical Group, the Siegenthaler Center-Hospice Care Inc., for their compassionate care of Michael. Darlene and I are very sorry to hear of Mike's passing. Mike was a great guy, and when his mother, Margarete, and my father ( John) were married he became a "great" son-in-law to my Dad, and we will always remember that. Our hearts go out for you three children and family as you lost a very nice and caring father.

Helen and family
Mike and Bob spoke often on the phone.They laughed and recalled the good life they had.The good lord spoke to them both and now my family and yours have a void in our lives but.........we know the boys are planning a new skit for us to see some day. My heart goes out to you and yours.

I was so sorry to hear of Michael Francis's passing. We were at Utica College together and I had a crush on him. Now and then I would bump into him when I visited a Utica. He was such a nice caring man.
