Paul Liddell Obituary

Paul Rowland Liddell 1936 - 2017
MARCY - Paul Rowland Liddell, 81, of Marcy, NY, passed away on December 20, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Syracuse, NY, on March 24, 1936, to Clarence and Rita (Barrett) Liddell.
Paul was first and foremost a loving and devoted husband and father. He attended Onondaga Valley Academy where he lettered in football and track. He graduated from Le Moyne College in 1958 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served for 23 years. A month after graduation from college, he married his high school sweetheart, Sally O'Hara, and they have been married for 59 years.
He started his career in education in the Syracuse City School District as a social studies teacher and then later became a guidance counselor. In 1968, he became the Vice Principal of Whitesboro Junior High School and, thereafter, he was promoted to Whitesboro High School Principal, where he served until his retirement in 1994. Following his retirement, Paul and his wife, Sally, spent their winter months, for seventeen years, in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
Paul's Roman Catholic faith was an integral part of his life and the compass that guided him in all that he did for his family and community. He taught religious education to teenagers in the Saint Paul's Parish for seventeen years, including a course he taught with his wife, Sally, called "Marriage and the Family".
Some of Paul's civic and community positions included: President of the Whitestown Kiwanis Club, Chairman of the Middle States Association for School Accreditation, Blue and Gold Officer for the United States Naval Academy and volunteer at the Bert Fish Hospital in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
One of Paul's favorite pastimes was working in his vegetable garden. He also greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at his camp on Tuscarora Lake and at their athletic events. Paul loved the sport of football and never missed a Whitesboro High School football game while he was Principal and throughout his retirement years. When he was unable to drive anymore, his good friend, John Messina, drove him to the games.
Paul is survived by his wife, Sally; four sons, Daniel (Betty Ann), Paul (Kelly), Robert (Lisa) and Brian; eleven grandchildren, Shannon (David) Diefendorf, Dr. Daniel (Chelsea), Connor, Meaghan (Tim) McNaney, Collin, Katey, Sarah, Eric, Robbie, Clara and Maggie; and three great-grandchildren, Brenna, Ronan and Lorelei. He is also survived by his brother, David (Janice) Liddell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 28th, at St. Paul's Church in Whitesboro. Calling hours will be at Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., Forty Main St., Whitesboro, on Wednesday, December 27th, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.. Interment in Onondaga Valley Cemetery will be private.
